they say "before using a chainsaw" you should have a certificate of competance which is the CS30 or equivalent. This is exactly as my NPTC trainer/assessor presented the requirements to me.

not meaning to sound picky but your above comment does clearly state that you SHOULD have CS30 which would indicate to me that it is not a requirement it is mearly a preference !???

EXACTLY!!!!!

But as an employer you really need to be seen to performing you "duty of care"

Its some what different if you are self employed, IMO.

i must admit i would not considder taking anyone on that does not hold the relevent certs for the job applied for . and tbh as a self employed person you still have a duty of care to thos arround you which in a round about way would mean that if something were to go wrong whilst you as a self employed person was carrying out (but not trained to do ) and something was to go wron injuring both your self and or fellow workers or the public then the HSE would have every power to throw the book at you .

it is hard to justify refresher courses. however, it is keeping on top of it. to pick up a tiny bit of info on a refresher be it from cs30 is keeping it professional and one step ahead of the posse.

Obviously there is are situations which may make it seem stupid ie 4th year of 31 and one is to undertake and pass 32. So does one refreshe 31 the following year? BUT there is going to be a point when all ye rookies have spent out yer 5yrs and it is time to refresh.

On a personal note im selfemployed. 30/31 out by 2yrs but it has been niggling the inside of my right arse cheek for that duration to get refreshed. the fact that i progressively got 32,33,34,38,39 in the subsequent years did make it out as if i dont really have to as i covered it all with these. Hoowever, it is a requirement to stay fresh. and for the value of feeling fresh im going for it. now the assessment isnt going to make me feel any fresher but it makes the license feel fresher and puts all ye in the same boat as me out ahead of the rest. its somehting similar to C.P.D. but on a cheaper scale!

Its not a license!!!!!:sneaky2: (I really hate it when people call them that!!!)

Its a "certificate of competence".

The units do not have an expiry date.

The HSE recommend some form of refresher training every 5 years, NOT retaking the units.

Although the training providers would love your take on things, as it would nicely keep them in a living!!!:sneaky2:
