Land for the Many A report to the Labour Party, June 2019

Perhaps a start would be some attempt to stem the flow of economic migrants and benefit abusers, that have to be housed somewhere.

Then re-develop some of the very very low density Council Estates,(the ones with vast swathes of neglected grass everywhere, at least here in NI) into higher quality and  higher density housing.

Then look at brownfield sites.

Last on the list should be greenfield development, unless low value moorland or desolate mountainsides.

I have read some of it and it is quite radical.  I am no labour supporter but the people who are behind the report have my respect.  I suspect very little of it will ever be enacted but maybe it will help start debate.

We we need to talk about the housing disaster that has befallen this country, and the extreme disparity it has created.  In the last twenty years house and land prices and therefore rents have spiralled out of control, which is lovely for many people, and a nightmare for the rest.

I haven't got off the first page yet but it's a bit telling that the value of housing is 51% of the country'e net worth compared to 26% in Germany. One of the more bullish brexiteers here  pointed out to me that there was a lot of inward investment from abroad, I imagine a lot of that is in housing thus increasing the demand and what is the elasticity of demand for property?

I can't see right to roam getting far as from personal experience other than in the popular walking areas PROWs are getting used less and currently under threat from wealthy householders diverting or closing them largely unopposed ( I do not object to paths being diverted away from houses in general but there should be a consideration for the public).

Here migrants need to support themselves, until contributed for 5 years, need a translator ? Go and hire one. As for land its all got too expensive, here its around 25 euros a sq metre so a decent building plot is about 25 - 30 K
