Seat belts are exposed to UV continually, so why are they safe????

The way i see it, our kit is LOLER inspected, and seat belts are checked in an MOT.

 

The governing bodies for each set the specifics of time and frequency slightly differently, but are still checked.

Seat belts are only checked for fraying and function.

 

It is inconstancy's like these that make me feel that most of the legislation we have to deal with is based on guess work and the ideas of those with a vested interest in us replacing our equipment.

what utter crap! i work with a number of arb equipment manufacturers & this sort of rumour really piss me off, i appologise for the opening 2 this reply but as it is quoting exactly what one of petzl top bods confirmed to me i find it most apropriate!

 

age of equipment is not of primary concern when carrying out a 'thorough examination of arboricultural equipment' it is at most a contributory factor

So are you saying you would like to see all varieties of industry and leisure, governed by the same set of rules then?

maybe they are treated with something or made from a different material

but good point dave:confused1:

maybe down to regs or en or just been overlooked

 

many ropes, slings & harnesses are treated to help limit the damage of uv rays! for example marlow are in the middle of installing brand new rope treatment macheinery as some was previously done out of house

 

andy made a good point about all inspectors not singing from the same hymn sheet and i would put this down to 2 main reasons:

1 many loler inspectors are arguably not 100% compitant, they took the NPTC and thought GREAT im a loler inspector which is allot like a student pasing his cs 39 and thinking he's a tree surgeon!

2 some inspectors are led by romour/ become soo detatched from what its like to work on the ground that they are a tad "fail happy"

 

i am curently undertaking a large, pioneering research project to quantify how significant defects to arb equipment are as well as compiling a data base containing all the relevent information needed by a loler inspector(some of which the manafacturors don't even know themselves), i'll keep u posted in the new year!

I point I was trying to make is that if as people CLAIM textiles deteriorate quickly after manufacture, WHY don't seat belts????????????????
