Cyanide

Didn't get much regrowth from hand clearing,  when I volunteered doing it, probaly less than 5% of  area total.

There seemed to be 2 distinct growth habits: the low 2-4ft stuff that formed dense "mats", then the  large bushes/small tree stuff  some was well  over 20ft ,which was alot easier to get rid of than the mats as fewer large, spaced out stumps to uproot, instead of loads of smaller dense ones.

Using a mattocks and a silky saws/bowsaws, job would of being alot faster and easier with mini digger and chainsaws.

Just the job- having the grab also makes it easy to give the roots a good shake to get all the soil off if it’s dry prior to dropping them on the fire

The only way to apply herbicide on Rhododendron that size is by mist blower or cut it down burn it and knapsack treat it when it is waist height in about 18 months.
As Doobin said, get a mini digger with grapple or rake and burn it all up, spot treat the self seeded and layered shoots next year.
We've successfully controlled large areas of rhody by hand cutting, then stump treatment immediately (within 5 mins)each cutter has a small hand held sprayer with 10% glyphosate.
Simples.
