Stump Heights - Answers from the Axemen of Oregon.

Recommended Posts

Got a reply from Gustafson logging to a question which I said I'd ask a while back - came up on the Axemen thread I think...

Greetings from Oregon,

Thanks for your question. Stump heights are viewed the same way here that you described. The times that trees my be cut higher than near ground level may be forced by the swell at the base of the tree, and of course, the larger the tree the higher the stump. Also, there are some timber growing companies that export their logs, which means no butt swell allowed and so the tree is cut high enough to accomplish that. I know personally it is a constant battle to get the timber fallers to keep their stumps low. I believe most of what you're questioning resulted from lazy or sloppy timber fallers.
