Saw size for milling

Hey all, I have a bit of a dilemma. Long story short...I underquoted a job and still have the stems to get out so instead of just cutting it up I thought I mill it and try and claw a little bit back. My issue is that the biggest saw I have is a 390xp. One of the stems will be fine for it but realistically, how big of a cut with it "cope" with running a loo pro milling setup? I'm a bit reluctant to go and buy a bigger saw for it.

660 is a fine on a 48'' lopro, so suspect a 390 will be fine on that.

You might what a few pauses in cutting with the chain running, just to make sure it's all getting enough bar oil

This fills me with confidence haha. Just to clarify...is that 48" cut or bar (meaning about 42"cut). I've got an auxiliary oiler kit I'll get fitted up so oiling shouldn't be an issue, I was just worried the saw wouldn't manage it is all

I think Bill will be referring to a 48" Lo-Pro Bar, so a 42" Cut. I doubt anyone would but a bigger 50"+ Bar on an equivalent of a 660?

Oak. 48" bar should suffice, I was just curious was all

If I can find a buyer. I have no idea on value, I'm just hoping to get enough to pay for the time to mill it. 1 stem is circa 2.5-3' and the second is circa 3.5-4'. Was thinking 2 1/4" boards unless anyone would suggest otherwise

I've done a far bit of beech and oak with 48" (42" cut) on a 66 and thinks its similar power output. Reckon you'll be fine, but if you were going to be doing weeks of it bigger saw would be the shizzle

Sounds like some cracking logs there!

 

Im sure more knowledgable folk will post soon. But I agree with you 2" or 2 1/4" seems to be what the market wants. 

 

Value would depend on the quality of course and if you bother seasoning them first? How long are they? 3m x 36" should see £200 a Slab Green. Rough Hewn here sells slabs so Im sure he'll have a more of an idea of value. 

 

Would be nice to see a pic of the logs.
