Refurbish existing or sell and re-buy another trailer

Tormenting myself with thissun.

I got a 20 year old strong built nominal 10 by 5 galvanised trailer (and virtually unused, due to being parked in a shed) , but only fitted with a Bradley Mk III hitch, no brakes ever connected, 2nd hand Polo hubs being used if I recall, it also needs new tyres.

But it tows like a dream.

So do I spend £1,200.00 on a full kit of parts, based on Avonride suspension units (and to incl LED lights) and refurbish, to give me a 2600 Kg trailer.

Or blow her out and buy another, but then I ud be thinking of a tipper, if changing anyway, and then even more money.

Buy a new one.

I have a buy a new one every three years policy.

Buy it new, work it hard for three years, sell for about 10-20% less than you paid for it and replace. I think it's the cheapest way to own a trailer, as no major bits are likely to fail and second-hand trailers hold their value in a way that defies logic.

As an owner I would sell & buy new.

As a buyer I would not buy it on polo hubs & a non braked hitch.

Indeed!

I suppose my conundrum is that I hardly need a trailer, 'cept when I do, and despite being 20 years old this trailer is effectively unused old stock, and would do me another 15 years, on my occasional light duties, if on proper running gear.

If I were nearer the Midlands there is a 3 month old/like new  BJ trailer , advertised at £2,250.00 that I would buy in a heartbeat, prob gone now mind.

And I am also buying at a tractor trailer, at about another 4 to 5 thou, so if a £1,200.00 investment left the car trailer good for my limited needs? But still?

And I never can bring myself to sell anything.

Sigh.

Buy a new one Marcus and hire it out. I don't know what a day rate with a reasonable trailer is, but it'll surely pay for itself eventually and will be better than the clapped out old trailer you have now for when you need to use it yourself?

I think to sell it with a clear conscience I would have to fit new axle / hubs.

As a towing trainer I can hardly claim that I did not know it was illegal.
