First aid training

How many people on here are trained in first aid, and do you keep your training upto date?

Ive read the requirements for cs30/31 and first aid at work training is recommended, but carrying a first aid kit is a must (this seems pointless if you havent been trained to use it :confused1: )

Which also begs the question, what to have in the kit, or do you just buy a commercial one?

Yes, I do keep first aid up to date.

Yes you should carry a kit whenever possible. It might not be you using it, might be someone else using it on you!

A bit of personal preference as to what you put in different kits. Look at the St Johns Ambulance website/catalogue its very helpful.

Is that your cocker spaniel in the avatar picture? Whats his breeding line. He looks like the carbon copy of mine. Mine is bred by Gareth Davies in Wales, by Ian Openshaws Mallowdale Grand.

Thanks Doug.

Yep, shes mine, Tawnyhill Swift, cant remember her exact breeding, but her grand-sire is Ian Openshaw's Dandrew Druid. She was bred by Tony Price in Kent.

Had her out working today on the Shoot, with my Toller and the Patterdale you see in the picture

Totally off thread.

Thats some team you have there, a Patterdale/Toller/Cocker! You must have eyes on the back of your head!

Probably some similarity in the breeding but then Openshaw is all over the cockers pedigrees just now. Mine is a potential trial contender but I have never trialled a cocker before, just the springer. Had a litter of cracking Labs this autumn, so should have an awesome picking up team in a couple of years.

Going back to the thread. The first aid training that i have had in the past has been St Johns or Red Cross, and has had very little relevance to most things that might happen in the field. Consequently i have not bothered in renewing it. The last first aid course i did, one of the other people on the course first aid kit comprised of a roll of gaffer tape !! (turns out that he was an ex paramedic, and he still had to do the course) there is nothing that can not be solved with a bit of the magic tape.

Lol yeah your probably right there, all first aid kits really do is stop you bleeding. No doubt gaffer tape does this very well:thumbup1:

I should really do an update, must be 8 years since I last did a first aid course.

as a company every one, absolutly without exception from the MD to the part time cleaner has FA that is in date. thats about 250-300 people

the min is emergency aid that teaches nothing moor than pluging ad bleeding, indirect pressure, unconsusios, and cardic/respiration problems

we have several FAW qualified and a few who have done more remote training.

we havea good relationship with a local providor, but even were we are truly remote is not that much of an issue, we can expect delays though, but there is always a limit to what extended skills one can practice without appropriate equipment, you cant do ET tubes and canulate for fuids unless you have them.

true you can learn alittle bit moor about better diagnosis and monitoring,

my opinion is some first aid training is always usful, but selecting those to get the further training is essential.

My first aid certificate is a Mountain First-aid one that has to be kept up-dated for my outdoor pursuits instruction work. It's not very different from the basic cert. except that it develops areas such as full body examination and extended periods of first aid (whilst awaiting far-off help).
