Army to Arborist!?

Hi, hope you’re all well. 

 

Firstly, sincere apologies if this is posted in the wrong place!

 

My name is Jack I am currently serving in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces, 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards. I have completed 8 years of exemplary military service, having so far reached the rank of Corporal. My primary role being that of an infantryman *wheey*.  I have served abroad on numerous occasions, including a tour of Afghanistan.

 

My secondary employment role is that of gymnasium 2i/c. Developing & implementing the PT programme in order to keep the battalion operationally effective. 

 

My wife and I reside in Hythe, Kent and have recently had our first baby. As you can imagine military life is not particularly compatible for a young family and so I am looking for employment within your sector! 

 

What I don’t have in experience in arboriculture I most certainly make up for in work ethic, discipline & willingness to learn new skills. I am a physically and mentally robust individual who has proven experience of working in dangerous and pressurized environments.

 

As part of resettlement and transition to civilian life, the Army contribute a substantial amount towards specific courses for new careers. I feel I could have a lot to offer and this could be something for you to note if you or somebody you know are looking to hire. 

 

I hold a full UK driving license (B, D, D+1) and although not directly specific to the job, I am a qualified rock climbing instructor (RCI).

Hi Jack,

I left the Army last year and have transitioned just fine into tree work. What you lack in experience you'll quickly find you make up for in work ethic, the hardest days tree work is still a walk in the park compared to a BATUK calfex ?

Feel free to drop me a message regarding the route I took and what qualifications helped and what were just overkill. There is a wealth of information here on Arbtalk about what kit to get hold of and youtube is a good teacher for tree stuff, so long as you look in the right places! (Climbing Arborist and the American ISA series are a good place to start).

I'm not based in Kent but did my tickets (well, most of them) with Kingswood Training in Shipbourne when I did my resettlement.  I think Andy Green runs it now.  Well worth giving them a shout and you would get some local work experience as part of your training with them.

They now operate under the name Treehouse, same instructors but the owner sold on the business at the end of last year. My class of four were some of the last students Kingswood had!

 

I'd happily recommend them, whatever name they choose to use.

Awesome to hear that you’ve been in my shoes recently and made it work so well! Well done. 

 

? Can’t say that I’ve been on a BATUS ex but I have just completed my 2nd Kenya and more notably Belize last year ?
