While I agree it's not difficult to get o licence, you can get a lot of 7.5 ton truck for the money and the extra payload means they are much more suitable..

When they break they cost more to fix... You do need 12 week checks, the MOT is considerably more involved and training drivers is costly and time consuming especially if you are an employer..

If you are in wales I can get you 75% funding.

By legally I mean in the context of the argument I was using.. IE in a crash for instance, I mean to say the brakes were built for the loading of more than their legal load on a down rated truck... I realize that a down rated truck can only carry its legal load..  but we both know most 3.5 trucks get over loaded now and then....

Now the fella I bought my down rated truck off told me I could carry five tonnes on a trailer..   which is odd as most trailers are three an half tonners..   not that I'll ever be loading my trailers beyond that but is there a trailer out there to do that?...

I don't mean the fifth wheel types as well.... in case it crossed your mind...

You would need active ie air brakes on the trailer to gross over 3500kg.

I get where your coming from Vesp, a driver with a hgv licence, driving a downplated truck, only the paperwork is different, but if it'd been kept a hgv, it'd be inspected more often for a start.

Pretty sure lewis hamilton would still get done for speeding/wreckless driving/murder if he hit a child in a 30 zone doing 80 in his ferrari. Its still speeding/breaking the law even though the driver and car are capable of those speeds.

True, 80 in a 30 is fecking stupid, but so is driving around 2-3t overloaded

Theres a guy on instagram with a 4x4 iveco daily, downplated from 5,5t, pretty sure i read unladen it was 3,3t! yet carries 10m3 chip ?

As soon as I fix my truck gonna go get it weighed at the scrap yard..   the fella who sold it me said it could carry a ton...   got an ally back on it, so maybe he ain't far off...

By the way I'm not advocating breaking the law, so much as defending the concept of it being better to be overloaded with a downloaded truck against a 3.5 tonner..

No I won't be overloading mine as well...   if I ever need to carry more I'll hook on a trailer...   perhaps an airbraked one in the future..
