With the rising costs of roundwood from dealers, I thought I would take a look at buying direct from Forestry Commission at roadside. Does anyone know of a haulier who works on a freelance basis in the South West, Somerset Devon sort of area and the rough costs involve of hiring an artic or lorry and drag to collect timber?

Timber hauliers are  nomadic feckers so best just have a phone around and see who has trucks in your area, they may well be from the north but available.  Decent site access both ends and a reasonably short run should not set you back more than £400 a load. Net weights will depend on the truck/crane combo and the drivers porn stash in the cab.

Although you may be keen to buy from FC they might not be willing to sell direct to you.

Have you made enquiries with them?

Not as yet but they do have a system for registering and then bidding on lots I believe. Must be open and above board.

I would imagine u'd probably be easier going via any other forestry company or even landowner rather than the FC, so much red tape and hoops to jump throu

Even have a word with the harvesting company they could probably sort it all out

100% agree. After 5 minutes taking a look on their website and the process of buying from them - never in a 100 years.

Agreed. The Welsh system is just as bad- very little information on what you're buying, lots of paperwork and you just have to enter one bid and take a wild stab without finding out how much you were outbid or won by.
