Firewood Storage

Hi all,

 

Great site I've found it really interesting. I'm not currently involved in Firewood but it's something I'm interested in getting into in the future. I'm currenty setting up a yard to store my mini digger and other bits of kit. I want leave an area that I could use for seasoning fire wood and just want to know what the best conditions are for seasoning? I would of thought off the floor on pallets or racking with some sort of cover but open at each end to allow wind flow? Do you have to mix the pile up every so often to let the logs at the center of the pile have there turn on the out side?

 

What other factors should I be thinking of? I know permissions/planning might be a issue but it is currently used for storage of machinery so I don't think it should be a problem.

 

Like I said I'm in the early processes of sorting things out so any advice would be gratefully received.

What you have described sounds ideal.

 

I have never heard of anyone mixing the logs up to promote drying.

 

It may well help, but I think it would be more trouble than its worth.

Stick a pallet on to under the cover aswell so they dont sweat(if you are sheeting over them.

If you use pallets etc I found you get rats, mice & rabbits move in because you have left a nice, dry emtpy void!

If you don't, you end up with a bottom layer of mildewed logs if there is any damp in the floor

And mice and rats will get into a logpile whether it is on pallets or not. We have the cat version of Hannibal Lecter that manages to squeeze under the pallets to hunt them. Got to admit, never heard of rabbits in a logpile. I suppose you could fill the freezer and the logpile from one source

Normally there need to be a food source to get rats.

Good luck with it....you should have had mine, it had a new jockey wheel and bellows on the brakes and really was like a new trailer. Never mind, someone has a mega bargain.
