PTO Winch

Hello,

I have an old PTO winch that I'm trying to get back to working condition but need some advice first. As you can see in the pictures the frame has seen better days and the cable is rusted into one big lump of cable, it all needs lots of Tlc. So I am thinking of building a new frame, Also I don't know if its possible but I'm looking into converting it to a hydraulic drive, if theres any point? The trouble with it as it is, is that being directly driven off the pto, control isn't that easy and also it is geared very highly so pulls very fast. Which I guess could be changed with a different size drive sprocket, but I was told hydraulics are safer so I thought I'd find out about that first.

I have no idea what the pulling power is or who built this winch, where it came from etc...any ideas???

Does anyone have any pictures of other winches for design ideas etc?

Wheres the best place to get new cable? I've heard a few people talking about this kind of stuff (Rockstomper.com) for 4x4 winches. Has anyone any experience with it??

Any input is appreciated!

Thanks for the replies. If this one is a waste of time, where do I look for a new winch? What I need it for is I have 20+ acres of hardwood that would provide me with plenty of firewood if I could get to it. Most of the wood is medium to large beech and sycamore and the valley is steep + tractor access is fairly limited so the longer the cable the better. I had some contractors come in and they used an old Boughton which worked really well. Any ideas?

knowone said anything about this stuff Samson-The Strongest Name in Rope, AMSTEEL-BLUE , is it any good? All I know is that it's expensive! Many thanks

hi i have a winch exsactly the same but it has a gear box insted of just a pto shaft straght to a cog , we made our own 3 point linkage and she does pull we have it on a county 1174 when u put a big tree on she will pull the county back even when the blade is right down and the anchor is about 2ft in the ground. we think it is out of an AEC matador or a millitant i will get some pictures on here :)

Personally I'd leave it and buy something else - looks like an accident waiting to happen :blushing:

I agree i'd steer well clear.

We use a steel cable in our winch although crushing is an issue. We had nylon core stuff but that was rubbish as it matted up on the drum. The EA only use Plasmarope in their winches and an assessor i know swares by it.

Whats your budget for a winch?

Personaly i'd look at uniforest ones unless you want to spend a lot the Igland ones. Also the size of winch depends on the size of tractor.
