that would be one of those 'educate the customer' scenarios - I wouldn't have even considered a thin - probably why I'll only ever be a lowly gardener and not an arborist.

Educate the customer, suggest thin and explain and then they request a Pollard anyway. I agree Pollard's can look great and prefer to see them than removal?

Flaking bark is just symptomatic of age,  new bark is formed annually form beneath and the older external face moves outwards cracking into plates and eventually wears away or sheds.

 

The red staining? Do you mean that appear on the fresh cuts or oozing from the bark? (can't see in the photos)
