Unpaid work to gain experience - N Yorks

Evening All,

Recently joined the forum. I’m currently serving in the Army and I’m trying to see if there is a way to gain experience in arb on an ad-hoc basis in the North Yorkshire region.

I am not necessarily looking for people to work for on this forum - so please redirect me as necessary (won’t turn away any contacts though!) but I would like some advice on what I would need to bring to an employer for them to bother taking me on.

what qualifications or certificates would be useful for me to have, so that I could actually add some value rather than just making people brews and watching? Clearly that is all experience based, I’m not above making brews while I learn what I’m doing!

I’d happily work for free as pay is not what I’m after. I have a background in construction and project management with the Army so H&S and site safety isn’t a problem. I’m a reasonably technically minded individual and I’ve got a decent amount of experience of rock climbing - I know this is totally different however I know the basics of rigging systems.

Any advice on what I need or how best to “market” this would be really appreciated. I’m trying to maximise benefit to myself and anyone who is kind enough to offer me the opportunity to gain experience.

Thanks,

Mike

Are you based at Catterick?
If you are thinking about doing a few courses try giving garath at arb-for training nr layburn a call as he looks after the training for a lot of service leavers and is ex forces himself.

Go to the link and download the "Bible" it's about £15 sterling. It will make everything else you do from this point easier and give you a theoretical understanding of tree work so you can communicate more effectively with anyone you work with. Print copies are selling for hundreds on ebay, for fifteen bucks it's like finding a gold bar in the dirt. Best of luck
