Rim sprockets for different bar lengths.

Good afternoon,

I will be replacing the worn 7 tooth rim sprocket on my MS880. I see that there are two commonly available ones being 7 and 8 tooth.

I run a 30" bar with a standard full chisel chain and a 47" bar for milling with a ripping chain.

Am I likely to see any improvement using and 8 tooth sprocket on the 30" bar when cross cutting over the 7 tooth?

Sticking with the 7 tooth for milling.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

James

8 tooth sprocket for 404?
Thought they were only available for 3/8?

Nope , you can obtain any number of teeth in any pitch if you get racing sprockets .........I have a 9 tooth .404 somewhere in the tool box .

I have used 9 tooth sprockets on 660 (I think). It be great when stinging sharp but less good as a little dull.

I'd try it for the cost of a sprocket it's worth a punt. But I doubt you'll be blown over by the difference

Yes you will see an increase in chain speed, I put an 8tooth 3/8 full chisel on my 661 with 25" bar to speed up cross cutting medium oak.
Wouldn't want to fell/bore cut with one as accuracy is a bit difficult.
Cuts like a m*********er!!!!
