I had also noticed that the word "coppice" appeared to be stategically avoided,not sure why - they seemed to prefer scenes of large machinery lumbering around softwood plantations ! whole thing seemed to be a bit unfocussed - just skimming the top of the subject I guess.

Showed a bit of (deer browsed) Hazel, but didn't mention the 'C' word. Most of the earlier part of the report implied that if you cut a tree down you had to replace it to be 'sustainable'. No mention of the thousands of acres of broad-leaved woodland that had been managed for thousands of years up until the end of WWII (roughly), of the different types of coppice management, of the importance of grazing animals in woodland eco -structure etc.etc...

An opportunity missed in one respect, but as I mentioned above, only too typical of TV today - can't go into too much depth, might ''narrow the reach''.

God forbid anyone should be asked to think for themselves.

Properly managed woodland will produce an abundance of sustainable firewood without having to clearfell. Properly done this country could produce huge amounts of firewood without destroying any existing woodland...

in fairness they did dwell a fair bit on the fact that none of the woods are "wildwood" and that they have always been managed - to the benefit of the flora and fauna,and of course us and that a subsequent lack of management was "not a good thing" - but as Slasherscot says it was classic reportage for our supposedly short attention spans!

yes he did........countryfile is now a more glossy type of programme looking for a more wider audience than the rural programme it used to be ,but this may help convert more people to installing some sort of woodfuel appliance.
