Walnut cause heave?

I’d only ever go on specific soil samples.

Where I live it can go from heavy clay to silty sand in a few metres. I’ve dug enough holes to know that.

 

Heave is pretty rare ime.

Big tree predating crap foundations in the right conditions of shrinkability maybe.

Staged reduction, also known as ‘delaying the inevitable’ is pretty pointless.

 

If the tree fell over, as it will naturally one day, the result is exactly the same.

 

I’d just get on with it.

That butt is worth about £20k.

British Geological Viewer (on line) is the easiest source. Search the BGS website for borehole records - they are there in profusion.
