Okay, think I might go and get a throw bag for the rope today. I know a throwline from the ground is the easiest thing but I want to practice without one to improve my climbing.

i personally reckon that the climbing starts with setting the throwline. get good at this and youll spend more time climbing and less time throwing your rope once in the tree which should improve your climbing.:001_smile:

Do you not think that basic advancing in the tree should be mastered before getting dependant on throwlines? Maybe I'm biased, I climbed for 7-8 years or so before I ever got a throwline. Now I'm quite good with the throwline so I reckon I have the best of both worlds.

i hear ya rupe but i get frustrated with some of the students that come over from the UK who cant even throw a throwline at all. I think its a basic skill but also advancing once in the tree using your rope is too, but from the ground i really believe its a huge bonus. A lot of the council trees we work on get climbed a lot and the constant rope wear really knackers them and so we now try and install a cambium saver via a throwline on virtually every tree. With removals ill install a line first using athrowline rather than spiking up on the flipline as i think its safer and quicker. Removing hangers with the throwline is also a bonus- i know you know all this, its just i think the throwline is often an underused tool due to the initial hardships of being accurate with the throw.
