Any ideas what killed this cypress?

Died within one season, neighbours tree looks to be on its way out also. No visible signs of anything that I could see

I saw one that was multi-stemmed that went the same way, stem by stem over about 3 years. It was some sort of fungal infection, at one point mycelium / mould like fruiting bodies could be seen coming from cracks in the bark. These appeared and then disappeared. We took it down a few months ago. Yours could be some kind of phytopthora though.

Is it possible to peel back any of the bark plates around the base? It is going to be felled, so when you do the work, take a few pictures of cross sections across the stem and post them on here. One of us will have an idea and it maybe that you need to report it or you have an opportunity to stop the rot.

Seeing the sudden demise; I am with Paul on his diagnosis.

Am I right in thinkin there's a phytophthora lurking for nearly every tree/shrub and woody plant?

I saw an almost identical tree a few years back and went down the route of P. lateralis but in the end it turned out to be an over adventurous gardener and a knapsack full of weed killer.

 

He had cleared the area directly below the tree by removing a lot of shrubby plants and killed them off with said weed killer but in the process of removing the shrubs he cut a lot of the Lawson's roots and subsequently killed the tree.

 

The tree looks to be next to some sheds; any chance of chemical leakage?

I don't think so. He also lost another one a couple years ago I believe
