Shortage,,,????

Run out,,,,,,,???????????

I live on the edge of sheffield, 5000 ha yes i will repeat 5000ha of woodland owned and controlled by the city council, and most of it going to waste.

ITS ANCIENT WOODLAND,but it was all cut for charcoal for the steel industry.

Much of our woodlands are now classed as "amenity woodlands", I do safety works for UU, in woodlands that were planted for timber, but are now used by walkers, I doubt they will ever be felled and most have already been thinned.

Do you think it is possible to make a full time living from doing logs?

You will need to be flexible and keep up with the trends and all else that goes on,but it cant be a bad thing to have more than one string to your bow.

If you have too much time on your hands your probably going wrong somewhere.:001_smile:

The irony is that the thing they want to conserve - the woodlands we have in the UK, and all the wildlife in them - are the way they are because the woods have been worked for thousands of years.!

A large part of this thread has a feeling of desperation. I would have thought the log business is something you have as an add on to your main business and build up over several years through good reputation. If you want to make it your main busineess you will need a large dry storage area at minimum cost so you can process and season a huge amout of timber through the summer. You are not going to earn a living wage from 300 tonnes of timber in a muddy field starting in september. Not having a go at anyone just my opinion. Start gradually and build steadily. The margins are tight and capital investment is relatively large. At the moment things are quite as the weather is mild but given a few weeks time dry quality firewood will be in high demand. The future looks good for firewood sales as fossil fuels are getting expensive and percieved as damaging to the enviroment. Keep the customers faith and promote the business for the future ( I sound like a far out man enviromentalist and I have had a few drinks so this could look really stupid in the morning )

Stay safe and enjoy what you are doing
