Apple tree issue...

One for the fruit tree experts...

I have a small Tickled Pink apple tree which I planted out early summer last year. I got it reduced from the nursery because it was a bit pot bound, but I sorted that out with minimal root loss when I put it in the ground. It did OK last year, and is now a very spindly 7 foot tall. I can't remember what rootstock it was on, M27 or MM106 I think.

This year most of buds have opened poorly, with stunted or twisted leaves covered top and bottom with a downy white 'hair' (first thought mildew, but not sure), and only two or three flowering buds. Oddly the flowering twigs seem to have better leaves too.

I have two other apples, similar ages within 10m of it which are doing great. Any ideas what this is, and anything I can do to help with it, greatly appreciated...

Definitely mildew, as already said.

Cut the infected bits off is best. The infected bits are very obvious before the leaves come out, cutting them out in winter is even better than now.

Water has definitely not been an issue, if anything it may have had a bit too much over the last couple of months.

If I cut off all affected parts there won't be much tree left! Hmm, bugger...
