Strange find in Woodland

hi folks,

 

While out looking through one of our woodlands in Knowsley I can across the damage to this Horse chestnut. I would usually put this down to mindless vandalism however this was in a rather hard to reach place in the wood and there are no tool marks!

 

Anyone have any thoughts or ideas what they reckon it is??

Dear damage ? Squirrel damage " ? There appear to be " claw " marks at the outer edges . No bears about are there !

That looks like squirrel damage to me, they absolutely love Horse Chesnut but then, so do Roe deer. Just been round my newly planted wood this morning and coosed the deer out again - between them, the squirrels and the bunnies, it's amazing any of my trees make it.

Whatever it was ,it appears to have eaten the best bits.

I wonder if it's a deere /squirrel partnership.

The gouges are rather large for squirrel teeth.

Unless it's a white rabbit with big nasty teeth.

I would say that is squirrel, but I can't be sure

Perfect height and teeth mark for deer although they do normally prefer epicormic shoots to cambium. Odd.

Put a trail camera up and then you can permanently resolve the issue correctly!!!

Have you Badgers around that area ?

 

Sure is a strong candidate
