It gets to a point when you need a decomp. I test all saws with using one JUST to make sure the saw will work OK using it.

 

Some saws react differently than others when cold starting and starting saws over 80cc without one is really not worth it!

Thanks for the replies, I'd only encountered them on ancient dumper trucks and XL500 m/c

What Makita saw uses the same cyl etc, is there one?

I rebuilt one of them this afternoon and got it to fire with a half decent piston in it, I'll try filling the tank tomorrow and goading some fuel through the carb

Wish I had been using the decomp on even my little 550 last few days which is a bitch to start with it in but if your running 5l + a day through saws consistant stopping and starting destroys your wrists even on small saws.
