Best sounding engines

Indeed. That top-end sound is very Stork-Werkspoor. The 8 makes the same music. But it's the audible muscle in the exhaust which is simply breathtaking.

Near as damn it the same video; a touch clearer.

I need to get to Newlyn for a fix.

These big marine diesels were ,until very recently , used as back up pumps to drain the fens.

I think the last of them went to museums.

Six unit version.

I understand the Germans tried to build a deltic style engine but couldn't work the cranks out.

Napier managed it .

Was this engine also fitted to war ships?

Yes I think it was fitted too warships and it used in some submarines they Opened it up to get its maximum power it must be 60 years old now that design

The scots flyer is a very famous loco it was bought back into freight duties a few years ago when there was a shortage of engines

If I remember correctly , Napier took two Mecedes diesels out of a German MTB and put a Deltic in place , which left one Merc diesel .

It performed better that way.

Napier were real craftsmen , that Sabre aero engine was a beast and would probably have sounded quality.
