There is a slight derail on one of the threads where people are discussing engine sounds.

So I thought I would start a new one.

My vote goes to a British F1 car of the 1950's.

BRM v16 1.5 litres and 700 hp.

Spine tingling sounds.

I have heard a few BRM V16 engines and I don't think I have ever heard one running on all 16 !

Déjà vu.

Not into high revving anything but a Husky 254xp in the distance in a winter woodland would win that one for me.

RR Merlin in a Spit is obviously a very evocative sound but that's as much the prop as the V12.

I've heard some deliciously creamy Yank V8's over the years and I still love the Buick V8 of Rover / TVR fame. Particularly in the P5 and P6.

Owned a few 6's and I love the sound of them on tickover. The Y30DT fitted to the Saab 9-5 (aka Isuzu Dmax) had a lovely song to it under pressure. Cummins et al fitted in International 956 etc is another beauty.

I even like the warble from the IH D239 / D246 in tractors and forwarders.

BUT the absolute winner for me, beyond any comparison is this:

Stork Werkspoor (SW Diesel) Straight 8. As fitted to a good number of Beam Trawlers. 800-2000 hp.

I'll never forget how the whole hillside above Newlyn reverberated with the sound of the exhaust as the skipper docked the 120' Billy Rowney one night. Likewise the Altje Adrianté on tickover while offloading the catch.

The deepest, bassiest, smoothest and richest sound of diesel power you've ever heard.
