Makita lathe

My ML8 Myford has been playing up so I built this new turning device yesterday.

I used the motor bracket and tool rest from the Myford and a couple of faceplates that bolt together. It has a 2kw motor but only one speed as far as I can see - will that cause problems?

I'm going to make an elm bowl with it.

Interesting setup!

2 things that pop to mind:

 

1) is the angle grinder clamped securely enough.

2) whether it's gonna spin too fast.

 

A resourceful setup 😀

Do you know how long you have to wait in A&E these days? 'cos there's going to be blood & lots of it!

That angle grinder is going to turn at 7000 rpm.

A block of elm(!!!) like that will need to be roughed out, well below 1000rpm.

If it stays attached, the angle grinder will jump about all over the place until it breaks free of the clamp, then it will REALLY jump about the place. I see that you have thoughtfully left a diamond disk fitted to the grinder as well. That should help once it cuts the cord.

If the block comes off - where's it going to go?

Please get someone to video this if you try, you may get a bob or two for the clip which will hel during the recuperation.
