Myrobalan plum or other purple leaved species. Bit like beetroot effect.

Alnus comes from a germanic word alors meaning red., refering to the colour of newly exposed timber.

But its more of a ginger red

Nice ideas. The computer says that Prunus cerasifera is commonly used as root stock and can propagate by suckering which would explain why the bloody things were everywhere!

I have a new found hate for roots....so much so I might start stumpgringing while cackling manically!
