3/8 chain on standard 550 xp

Clarks do small spline 3/8 rims. But only 7 tooth. If you want 8 then you need the clutch drum with the standard spline.

550 handles 3/8 pretty well on 15". Will be fine in Oak.

Have run 3/8 on mine for the last 4 odd years, normally on an 18" bar. Runs it fine and anyone that has used it says what a ripper it is. Chain speed is increased as the sprocket size is larger.

 

3x8"x7 will of course produce a higher chain speed out of wood than .325x7 - but .325x8 would about even that out.

 

Both the larger sprockets will give the resistance from actual cutting more "arm" to work with though, against the torque of the saw - meaning that the rpm and chain speed will drop faster in wood.

 

There really is only one way to find out what works best in a given situation, and that's the obvious one.

A small 7-spline 3/8"x7 is Oregon #18720, Husky #504 52 30-02.

One of my customers prefer 3/8" (15") over .325 on his Husky 550 xpg.

 

There is nothing wrong with testing the options, and don't forget the .325x8 option.

Sorry to derail the thread some what but why would you want to run a 3/8th chain on a 550. Surely it would cut slower as it is creating a wider kerf.

 

Have been running the narrow kerf oregon chain but finding it a bit delicate- snapped a couple of cutters but does seem to cut fast in the timber.
