Makita DCS5121 with Alaskan Mill

Hi

I am after some advice please.

can I use my Makita chainsaw DCS5121with 20 inch bar with alaskan mill to mill 16 inch diameter 6 foot long wild cherry logs.

this will be my first milling project. I know this will be slow and not efficient but is it possible?

can it be done with standard chain which came with the saw?

Having done some Alaskan milling before with a 066 and struggled I would say yes you could but you stand a high risk of over heating the saw!!

You would be better suited to a 72cc + saw buddy, milling puts a lot of strain on a saw, I used to use a 576xp with a 20inch bar for small milling or a makita dcs9010 for bigger material with a 30" bar,

I think you will be ok you know it will be slow and just let the saw cool down after every cut. Give it a try anyway and don't forget to upload some pics.

I use my Husky 365 with a 24'' bar chain filed to 10 deg let the saw do the work don't force it maybe fit a winch to the mill. Also use my 550 with a 16'' low pro bar and chain again filed to 10 deg to cut the smaller stuff ready for my small workshop bandsaw.

One more question. do I need to buy different chain to use with my Makita DCS5121. I read about ripping chain but not sure which one will fit my saw and where to buy.

also I saw Alaskan mill 36 inch on the bay for very good price, I assume they are copy and not original. For occasional hobby milling are they ok?

I have checked but Makita DCS5121 is not in the list.
