So I have done a rare thing and read a set of instructions and wished I hadn't. The instructions say first file with a 4.8mm file and then a 4.5mm file and file 10deg of the level and at 25 deg.

I have no probs with the 25 degrees bit but using two different size files and 10 deg of the level sounds a bit different to me, what do you think?

4.8 when chain is new and when it gets to about half left step down to 4.5 . as the top plate edge moves toward the back of the cutter it slopes down so ideally you would need a slightly smaller file to bereally religious about it .

That make sense Stubby what about the filing 10 deg off the level?

Several Oregon chains are 25 degree and 10 degree and are made for Dolmar and Husky.

 

eg Husky H42 = Dolmar 099 = Oregon 73LPX

Problem is, I use a sharpening jig and I don't think it will allow for that 10 degree offset. Don't have it beside me to say for sure.

How important is the 10 degree offset?

I'm going to stick my neck out here and say not very.

I kinda do 10 degrees down buy hand on Husky and Oregon chains and level on Stihl chains but it dosn't matter a toss really .
