Learn your fungi and make sure your tree ident is up to scratch. Everything else you'll be taught 2 days prior to your assessment. Listen to the tutor, pay no attention to the guy sitting next to you who thinks he knows his ****. Good luck guys. Good fungi ident book to help - Manual of wood decays in trees. Think you can pick it up for £20

A lot of the stuff you're going to be going over is in The Body Language Of Trees - essential reading.

You'll need to know your principal decay fungi, about 18 in total.

Quick tip if you're not privy or a bit green as I was is developing a key for your wording in the assessment is a big deal. Make sure you go over the workbook and get your legal terms and legislation down.

Enjoyable course, best of luck.

Get out there and try and do as many mock inspections as you can... get to grips measuring cavities, tree height, radial spread, tree lean, fungi ident, pest and diseases.. you only have 20 mintues to do your examinated inspections.. get some decent binos, compass, some form of cavity probe...definitely read loads about decay, decay fungi and body language of trees, also read up on duty of care, Occcupiers liabaility act...and learn the difference between Common and statute law.

Good luck!

dont just learn fungi idents but what they look like when they're decaying and all mushy. Very good chance in the exam they may have a sample of an old dessicated laetiporus or phaeolus to identify.

They should throw in a Podoscypha multizonata or Hericium coralloides just to mess with people. :laugh1:

...or a blackened stipe of Armillaria!
