My David brown 990 leaks a bit of fluid from the power steering ram.I top the reservoir up about once a month.today I found some auto transmission/power steering fluid deep in the depths of my workshop,filled the tractor,within half an hour it was smoking from pump and practically boiling out,drained it,put new fluid in,fine.does it lose a cooling property over years? Stumped me

It may lose its anti foaming additives over time but I also wonder if it had got some water in it?

It may be hygroscopic and absorbed water over time and you saw steam .......

 

The pump got very hot,was an unopened 5l drum,I'll check the spec on the can but it didn't like it!!
