Information in waste disposal??? x :trytoflyIi

hi my name is abbbie and i am writing this thread to ask if anyone has any information on logs and chip disposal ... at the moment we currently give our chip and logs away for free to a log yard because it is close to us and very easy.... any other methods in which you would find more sustainable i would be very grateful if you could share your methods and what other methods you have tried... many thanks abbie

Have you thought about chip for biomass fuel and logs as firewood?

It must depend on the size and quantity of logs you are producing. I only produce a small quantity and have given away poor quality green stuff (willow/poplar etc) to people who can store it for long periods but can't afford to buy elsewhere. Better logs (ash/sycamore etc) I store for about 6-8 months and then sell on to a neighbour who can carry on seasoning before use. I have also supplied larger diameter stuff to a local project to edge pathways through woodland (doesn't matter what species here). Basically you can get rid of most if you ask around and price it right. If you are producing large quantitiesand/or decent quality the guys here will sort you out.

it depends if you have any storage space for the wood you are accuilating and how much and frequently you get hold of it?, i would check out some info on coppicing to give you more of an idea how to produce it in to a saleable products , biomass is a great idea and it is really taking off in a big way around here as are logs/kindling etc, hope is helps?

you need to start with somewhere to keep your logs and chip to start with.

logs can be converted to firewood

chip is a bit more tricky

if you produce enough, quickly enough, it can go for biomass

but then you need access to a loader and your yard needs to be arctic lorry friendly

most people who sell for biomass tend to have access to a loader already so dont need to purchase one

- our yard isnt any good for arctic access so we give our woodchip away.

what does the log yard you currently drop off to do with your chip

is it worth approaching them to give you some yard space in return for the chip which they can sell on for biomass (might not be something theyll go for) - do they have access to a loader - could you store woodchip and logs there - sell the logs and chip yourself to pay the rent?

theres a lot to be said for just having the ease of giving it away and forgetting about it to be honest.
