Grease bands and winter moth

Hi all, a client of ours (elderly very nice client) has been forking out fortunes on tiny pots of "grease band" to apply to her well maintained apple trees. I notice the major ingredient is Hydrogenated rapeseed oil and wonder if

 

A) anyone knows a cheaper trade/bulk supplier

 

B) knows of an alternative or some paper/research staing the potential waste of time inefectivness of the method

 

C) wether it might be possible to just use Hydrogenated rapeseed oil as this could be sourced cheaply in large amounts I am certain.

Isn't the idea to stop the caterpillars crawling up the trunk? In which case anything sticky should do the trick; why specifically rapeseed oil?

hello all, i know tescos do it for, i think £15 - £20 for 25liters. i used to pick some up for a guy i worked with to put in his truck. hope this helps

why not just use a muslin or carboard insect barrier, with a nice overhang and stickytape rim.

he had a heating kit conversion on his truck, so he could use green fuel. not sure how it worked exactly thou? i know you have to get some short of licence to do this sort of thing. sorry to go off the point of your thread.

We used to buy insectide chalk in the tropics, it was pence. Dunno what was in it, most likely ddt. No bug would cross the chalk line not even army ants. Get some of that on your apples

Anything that is thick and sticky will do, you are just limited by you imagination. However don't use anything to edible, and my old dog made himself horribly sick licking off the grease around my fruit trees. You can buy ready made grease bands that stick on from good garden centers or mail order. The last ready made ones i got from the organic gardening catalogue
