Not sure if microscopy is relevant depending on the metal, but I wouldn't have a clue what metals the wheat abrasive might encounter in a mill. The rollers would invariably be stainless steel I imagine, but who knows what else there'd be in the bowels of the machine. I do know, though, that anything I've ever made with a bag of stone-ground flour from the gift shop of a working windmill or watermill has had a certain quality to it that I've never been able to place.

Crikey. Should there be efforts made to switch back to stone querns? Presumably the tiny bits of stone, ignoring the obvious damage to your teeth, are healthier than the various metal dusts?

On the evening walk up the hill. Always two dogs, usually one cat, sometimes two. The cats are doing their best to tell Oscar that they are willing to play with him, but only on their terms, and that they have claws. He'll get the message soon enough.

I want to be charitable and say he's cleaning up beaver damage, but I don't think that's the case.

Yeah, that sort of thing. Definitely needs a burnt finish to minimise further rot. Start it off with a variety of drill bits and the little saw, chisel, etc. Easiest to take a lid or a base off and tunnel it out that way, but I'll try and do the smaller ones through just the entrance hole. Anyway, it's not exactly top of the to do list at the moment. One day.

Nice, I'm always on the lookout for nice hollow bits. I cut out and kept some rot pockets on the last few ash and sycamore I removed, I intend to turn them into bee, bird, and bat houses. Tempted to try hollowing out a big piece with some hot embers and a leaf blower.

My brown hound has learned how to crunch them down just fine, as have generations of my folks' border collies. On the other hand, my wife's girlhood springer had surgery to remove a cooked chicken bone. So it's a tricky one, really. I appreciate that it's a potential risk, but I also refuse to waste such a valuable quantity of protein. Oscar has only had raw and dried so far (big bags of dried chicken feet, nice cheap treat), but when the time comes for him to have a femur from the stock pot, I'll be holding on to one end of it, just as when he was learning to eat raw chicken legs.

They are both sitting on it. Roast chicken carcass for dinner last night.

We'll do what we can 42, until we prevail or run out of things to try and preserve. I've noticed far fewer buzzing things around the garden centre so far this year, hopefully the warm weather will bring more of them about, but it seems like a slow start. Good looking bee house, anyway.
