Augmented Reality .Will it destroy us or set us free? When will it be better than reality? Is it reasonable to say that it is only a matter of time before it is better than reality? Cant be assed researching it but think I know enough to give it a bash and welcome others views and opinions on something that is very real and a present danger in my eyes. Imagine having any conversation with a person but they are present in the room to chat to instead of by text email or phone, they could be there with you ,or for them you with them. Having a party ? then you can have any entertainer or band you like playing live in your front room, from the past or present. Even pack the place out with fake guests. If you want naked women walking around your house its going to be possible, I believe porn will control mankind with what`s possible. Instead of watching porn on a screen you will just have to put on your special glasses and bang any porn star you want or scene played out in front of you on your own bed. You could invite friends over for a chat ,even play darts and drink together in a digital pub, its all possible whilst walking around your own pad talking to yourself but really feeling like in the pub with ya mates who are also at home walking around like zombies chatting to themselves. Need advise on a tree from a mate and with the tech the guy can be there with you, is going to be possible. For education it will end the expensive need for schools as a teacher can be present in the home. Same for Uni and colleges. Learn to cook with a top chef next to you. There`s loads of amazing ways it will change the world. I have guessed half this stuff above but I am sure with my limited knowledge of tech its still highly possible and likely to happen, and what with 5G its definitely making it easier to happen. BigJ`s thread about vehicles and road investment ect got me thinking this n that n I believe the future is us all staying at home as much as possible as reality will suck compared to what Virtual and Augmented Reality will bring. I believe we will turn into hermits , food delivered and parcels by drone...We will be too busy masturbating and living a fake reality to be driving anywhere or caring what is anywhere. I can see it being something that we will all want and it will be a must have, but it will also destroy us , we will become hermits and want to live in pods in a city and never give a shit about anything ever again other than work and getting home to our Augmented world...Is it self induced slavery?

In extreme circumstances I believe it could have always failed after say 20 years ,and with the little maintenance it has obviously received shows a lack of responsibility and knowledge IMO. Built correctly and for the full purpose instead as I strongly believe a simple Cap to just stop soil being washed away then yes you are right, but it was not built to withstand a torrent of water it was built to simply stop soil being washed away for the very near future back then...It was a simple short term cap ...by not realising it would fail in time then they now have failed in their responsibility to carry out adequate risk assessment's. Climate change has been shoved down our necks for years , that post I did of the years with flooding shows it is a real possibility anywhere in the UK in any one year so to keep this Dam full is or should be a risk, no hindsight needed just common sense.

I would think they used the mesh sheets in the concrete ,and then these slabs sat on some kind of support at the edges. No bar used at all as it was just built as a cap not a structure? is my guess. Its like a roof for the soil, but built in the cheapest way with the least metal and concrete possible.

If core drill samples of the spillway were taken then the lack of re-bar and voids beneath would have been discovered and it would never have been allowed to be used. Why would they do this...because in California US a few years ago a very similer incident occoured at the Oroville Dam that was on all the UK news and obviously big news for any people who manage Dam`s. The US incident had plants/trees growing on there spillway in google pics taken from before it failed, and it failed where the plant growth was, just like this one. Also the US spillway was not constructed with enough re-bar or proper foundations, the thickness of the concrete ect was not up to modern standards and rules and if know pre-fail then it would have been changed. After the US incident at the least send someone up to drill a few holes to see the condition and why not de-weed it and grout the joins. I honestly just do not understand why they did not learn from the US incident...They certainly missed a trick there,at the least a few executives could have had a free holiday there on a fact finding mission...maybe that's to come.

Eggs will prob know if its true but when I was laying drainage a few years ago I was told due to minimum fall levels n that...that pipes full of turds and wet wipes need the piss water to help move em along ...if you just flushed the solids and there was no rain then you may get problems? Also the water must dilute the raw sewage flowing around the system and help control gases and smells?

If you lay concrete onto soil then a void will occur over time as the soil will dry out and naturally compact, add gaps in joints to allow water and the void will only get bigger unless the water is contained and then you have swelling, but that is not happening here. I don't know how this dam was built but I cannot imagine there are no supporting pillars or walls beneath the slabs as they would have sagged or moved along time ago without something supporting them other than soil. With the thickness of the concrete and lack of re-bar there must be something other than soil holding that span of concrete up??

Its usually most years a 1 in 100 year event. I see where you are coming from with the 180 but I would also say that the maintenance has maybe not been so bad in 180 years to. How rare is extreme weather that causes flooding. 2004 Boscastle Cornwall 2005 Flooding in January in Carlisle and June it was the North York Moors 2007 June and July Yorkshire and the Humber and South Midlands 2008 Sept ,south Wales and north-east England, Oct east Devon 2009 November ,The lake District 2010 November , Cornwall 2012 No flooding but November 2012 resulted in one of the wettest weeks in England in the last 50 years 2014 January to mid-February saw widespread impacts and major flooding problems. 2015 North UK and Cumbria 2016 November flooding mainly across parts of south-west England 2018 October, south Wales particularly badly affected by flooding. I know that not all events above were called a 1-100 year event but a lot were .These 1-100 year events or extremes of weather are so common they are to be expected...If I had an old Dam ,at the wettest time of the year and the long range weather forecasts were all unusually agreeing and saying a wet and windy month to come, do you fill it or keep it at a safe level in case of extreme rainfall?

This time of the year for the UK is the wettest time, July and August. I don't think the water would be static, it was moving as you can see all the voids under the slabs. Water had washed away some soil before the slabs collapsed, it did not collect or stay put until collapsing. The ground being soil and the slope it was on would not allow water to gather and be static, if it was clay or solid or on flat ground then yes.

He is/was one hell of a rich powerful guy. Unbeknown to my family we had his nephew as a customer once , we took over a holiday hire shop business in Tenerife and he was an existing customer who owed 2 months rent for a TV. They let me in to the apartment to find the TV, it was not there so I said I will have to take the VCR that was as we need paying or compensating...That's when the possibly life changing question was asked "do you know who he is" of course I said "no" as his name was not Palmer...Luckily I believed them when told and left immediately apologising for my intrusion and demand for payment..."just tell him to ring us whenever he can please ,bye"...If I had removed goods, I guarantee me or my family would have suffered , even for threatening to take goods I'm surprised nothing happened...week later the lad rang and I met him to get the money, nice lad...months later always wondering if he was who I was told he was I saw him walk into this posh hotel as if he owned it and the receptionist confirmed he was the boss , and a Palmer family member. Years ago there was an ITV documentary on the people who went missing in Tenerife, working in Timeshare for John Palmer. Palmer must have been one of the richest criminals in UK history? Maybe the Hatton job was in order to retrieve some of his hidden wealth?

The problem in Cali has only just been fixed , every dam owner in the world should have taken note at the time and inspected there own old dam`s and taken measures to ensure it could not happen to them. Blaming the weather is bullshit. Looking at news footage as the Helicopters drop of their ton bags it is plain to see that the concrete slab spillway lacks metal re-bar and no solid foundations or piles , again similar to the Cali one. Why at the wettest time of the year was this old dam allowed to be full when the owners knew of its possible weakness? If they did not know then they should have done more in the first place to know.
