  1. Hi Ben, I am doing it this way to build up a business slowly. Working in a non physical job for 3 days a week will mean I have plenty of energy to do tree work with remainder of the week. My end goal is to be working for myself full time. I didn't want to jump into it head first chasing every job and expect it to be a success.
  2. Agreed but I have spoken to people who will just kick a nest out a tree if they come across it or put a nest with chicks through the chipper it was more this action that I was comparing the cruelty.
  3. Ok I understand, I think my situation might be a bit different but I will bear that in mind. Thank you.
  4. I will be working in a different county to where my business will be operating. I have cleared this with the council so I don't expect any issues.
  5. This is the strangest site I have ever seen. I read it in an American accent like the sales pitch on a QVC shopping channels. I think you should have another go, seek professional help.
  6. Guess I will just have to be overweight. Surly every 3.5ton Arb truck is.
  7. Looks good. Have you had it weighed when full of chip?
  8. Hi Kev I'm not going to focus on freelancing my main focus is going to be getting my own work. I may freelance to fill days. I am going to working as a tree officer for 3 days a week so I only need to be getting 2 days work a week, any extra is a bonus. I like the look of the cabsters, I have seen a couple within my budget but the mileage is pretty high. I have cut up enough brash on the back of a tipper to know I never want to do it again and more so have someone employed by me do it. I don't think chippers depreciate massively so I am happy to invest in one.
  9. Every van I look at seems to have poor payload is there a van out there that will deliver payload under 3.5t Or do I just have to accept it and drive illegally?
  10. The yellow is horrendous but I reckon I could pull it off with matching uniforms!
  11. Awesome advice I am learning with every reply. So I am going to get my deposit back from the Renault don't even think I'm gonna bother with the test drive. It had loads of new parts my dad reckoned it had been in a prang and the steering wheel was recked for 40k miles so bit suspicious even though it's from a big dealer. From what I've read on hear Ivecos are good Arb trucks. I'm going to go see this one this week. Any advice welcome! http://www.towcestercommercials.co.uk/used-vans/iveco-daily-towcester-201611189872084?at_source=autotrader&at_medium=unknown&at_campaign=website-visit
  12. They don't have to be competitive they can underprice every job they look at and pass on the loss to the tax payer! I have experienced this first hand.. Arb Manager/ Tree officer (yes he had two roles) prices a job to take 5 hours.. it takes 10 hours! Said manager then tells us to only book 5 hours as private work and book the rest as council hours! Said manager then gets high fives from senior management for delivering on the private work but nobody is the wiser because nobody is monitoring the council work.
  13. A Lead climber for the last council I worked for got 32k a year 25 days holiday plus bank holidays good pension up to 6 full sick pay. One of the lead climbers didn't even climb. I kid not! PERKS indeed [emoji23] Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  14. I have worked for both councils that do and don't do private work. In theory it's a no brainier for the councils as they already have the kit and the infrastructure. In practice less emphasis is put on the council trees and more on building the private client base. With a lot of creative accounting to make sure the private work looks good on the accounts. This being said the money then goes back into the council which can't be a bad thing.
  15. Thank you very much for the advice. So is it a must to get twin wheels at the rear? Good advice about the engine because that's the only thing the warranty doesn't cover. I've seen a couple of Citroen relays at a good price anyone had experience with these trucks?
  16. Sorry for the swears in the post last night I was a bottle of red down 🍷! By 2020 all government funding for councils will end. The government has made it clear that councils have to become self sufficient I believe they are now allowed to collect business rates. They are now being run as a business rather than a service. So they will try and make money wherever they can which will in theory go back in to running the council and benefit the constituents.
  17. Cheers I took my dad who gave it a good look over! It comes with the option of a 2 year warranty for £450 which I think I will take. Plus the dealer is going to put a new tailgate on the tipper body which has seen better days.
  18. I went to view this van yesterday and put down a £100 deposit and am going to test drive on Wednesday. http://www.watfordvans.co.uk/used-vans/6725037-renault-master-ll35-2.3-dci-100ps-tipper-sat-nav-e-w-tool-box/ To me it seems a good deal, what do you guys think.
  19. If the vats majority of Arb managers/owners on this forum were put in charge of said local authority Arb budget they would make a great success of it! Imagine that massive budget to be spent on kit, having the customer having someone they can trust (you can sue the **** out of the council if **** goes south) the problem is it's not a profit driven organisation! So top management does not give a **** as long as H&S is being complied with and there ain't too many sick days! NOTHING ELSE MOTIVATES THESE GUYS 😡
  20. I feel if you explain the legalities to the client of wildlife and countryside act they are almost always happy to delay the works until the nests are fledged! Not doing so in my opinion is totally immoral, unprofessional and cruel. And if you lack such empathy you don't separate yourself from the dog fighting, badger baiting scum that roam our land. If you find a nest during work STOP and finish once fledged. It's simple and it's the law for a reason. If the client does not respect this report them!
  21. Say goodbye to your 9k if you go through with this!
