  1. Don't forget the possibility of creative accounting. Private job overruns= mark it down as council time.
  2. Norse group which is owned by Norwich council has taken over several councils in England. When they take over a council they operate all the councils standard services as well as doing private work with the same teams. 50% of the profits go to the local councils and 50% goes back into Norse group.
  3. Brilliant thanks for that. I'm mechanically retarded but my dad knows what he's doing!
  4. So I am seriously considering buying this van. Is has anyone on here ran a crafter as an Arb truck. How hard is it going to be to remove the tail lift. Thanks all.
  5. Morning Ben, I have considered the stress and hassle of starting out but because I have the guaranteed income of my Tree officer job I feel that will take some of the pressure off. I hope to do a bit of freelancing with the thought that I could get a decent rate if I bring a van and chipper with me. Working with an established outfit would be great I will have to see if there is a demand for it in my area.
  6. Great thanks for confirming that. I've just been reading about the Transit master key central locking which is making me think twice about a transit. I've seen a few Mercedes tippers at a reasonable price does anyone run one?
  7. I've done freelance climbing and it hasn't always been straight forward or the best experience. I'm set on giving it a go on my own. I have about 5 good mates who will all ground work and rescue climb when needed at weekends which should see me through to start off with. Out of interest is this advice you would have given yourself when you started out.
  8. That may be a bit far for me. I'm in Bedfordshire. Thanks anyway.
  9. Haven't seen many for sale where I have been looking but will keep an eye out.
  10. On another topic I need to get an accountant as soon as possible for advice on my initial outlay. Can anyone recommend one in the Beds Herts area? Thanks for the help.
  11. I will mull it over Tom. The chipper you have on there looks great too. Where abouts are you based?
  12. What wheel base is best for an Arb truck? SWB, MWB or LWB? I'm guessing MWB.
  13. Yes they have quite a high turnover of lecturers at Moulton. I was taught by Ian Mcdermott, Russel Sharp and Malcom Godwin that was back in 2013.
  14. Hahaha I could see that being a good seller!
  15. Yea sorry I knew what u meant, just wondered about that also. I may not go for that one now because it may be more to insure with the double cab and if I don't use it to store tools it would be wasted space. It is a nice van with only 40k miles on it so a bit of a shame.
  16. I did wonder how much all that metal in the cage weighed. Thought it would be a good option until I could afford a purpose built Arb body. Or I could do with out and use greedy boards for a while.
  17. Good point I will look at single cabs as well. What are your thoughts on the cage.
  18. This was a concern for me. I spoke to HR and they advised that it shouldn't be a problem as I will be working in Hertfordshire and operating my business in Bedfordshire. I have told them from the outset this was my plan.
  19. Ok thanks for that I will bear that in mind. 👍🏻
  20. I read about that. I've not seen any petrol vans for sale I saw an electric one but was a bit dubious. I am based in Bedfordshire so I don't think it should be a problem.
  21. I am thinking of this as I thought I could line the cage and keep my tools in the back seats. Any pros or cons to doing it like this?
  22. Hi all, I have recently got a job as a tree officer on a part time basis 20 hrs a week. So I feel this is the perfect time for me to go self employed. I have been climbing for 5 years and have been to Shuttleworth and Moulton college which I got the FdSc degree in Arboriculture. I have some savings which I intend to buy a van and chipper with. I have been mulling over what the best van for me is and I am leaning towards a double cab transit tipper and a timberwolf tw230. I basically want to pick all your brains for what you think would be the best setup and maybe share the mistakes you made when setting up so I can try to avoid them. Thank you for any help and advice you can give.
