  1. My Dad when he was due to be called up got all the talk from the RAF about join us as a rear gunner, flying pay, sergeants stripes etc despite his eyesight not being the best. My uncle told him the facts and that he probably wouldn't live long enough to enjoy it. Dad marched into the Army recruitment depot and volunteered. Posted to REME as a driver, had a cushy posting for a while driving WRAC officers and then ended up in Italy slogging his way up through the mud and into Austria at the end of the war.
  2. My uncle (WOp/AG) flew with Coastal Command on Sunderlands, mainly with the Canadians in Ireland out over the western approaches and Atlantic. Survived the war but was sadly killed a few years later flying whilst seconded to BOAC. Those guys were just so brave, the thought of flying a Lanc at 60ft at night is mind blowing. Gibson especially so to stay around to draw the ack ack fire. 'Enemy Coast Ahead' is a good read. Shame he was killed later in the war.
  3. Fascinating so did a quick google search and found this SpitfireSpares.com - warbird Gunsites SPITFIRESPARES.CO.UK
  4. Check the vacuum tube hasn't got a split in it.
  5. As Gareth said it's the vacuum fuel pump
  6. Came across this as about the only technical data coming up in search. Page 2 mentions mixture can separate at low temps and is irreversible. Ethanol doesn't help. https://discount-equipment.com/library_files/2903.pdf
  7. He almost certainly has forgotten more about chainsaws etc than I will ever know but I know that if you're going to work on a machine that 'Probably' has a bad bearing (his words) you clean it up first before stripping it. That comes from my apprenticeship training as a Fitter but hey maybe those old timers who trained me were talking out of their *****. For the record I don't use Ultra and don't know why it should be a problem but as an engineer I find it interesting.
  8. Wildlife cameras are very useful for catching those who are up to no good as well as the wildlife.
  9. I might have been more impressed with Richard Flagg if he'd cleaned the saw before stripping it down and dropping the crap into it.
  10. Americans just love their promo/discount codes.
  11. Remember having a stand at the NEC at an engineering exhibition, someone managed to nick a large potted plant from the stand while staff were talking with potential customers.
  12. Initially was rural village and latterly small town. Village was no trouble at all, posh houses to social housing. Town was generally ok again the catchment covered large detached to social flats. Had a local town councillor insisting her teller could stand inside the polling station which is not allowed and trying to tell me my fortune. Remember pointing out the threshold in no uncertain terms to her, got a pat on the back from elections staff for putting her in her place as she had previous.
  13. Having worked for many years for the local councils as a Presiding Officer at a Pollling station and also at counts and postal vote verification I can only remember one occasion when I felt suspicious of a voter. Main problems were the great British voter not bothering to register to vote and then complaining they were being denied their rights or trying to vote at the wrong polling station. Also the number who turned up to vote and asked 'What's this vote about?' often followed by 'Who should I vote for?'. You really couldn't make it up.
  14. He did - no reply
  15. It's not likely to be a problem as there seems to be a distinct lack of battery availability for these and other saws so you won't be able to drain a non-existent battery.
  16. Advice from our council when I had garage roof replaced was obviously don't break it, wet it first then wrap double in polythene and tape up. Taken to local recycling company who accept asbestos from Joe public in small quantities into special enclosed skip. All legal and paperwork to back it up. Usual precautions regarding masks, gloves and disposable overalls etc.
  17. Wouldn't be a tree but an Ent. Bit slow, looks after trees, but gets there in the end. If any of you are puzzled Ents were tree shepherds in Lord of the Rings.
  18. To paraphrase Nicholas Cage in Con Air 'on any other forum that statement might be strange'.
  19. She absolutely stole the show for me, just confirms what a twat Truss is.
  20. NFU without doubt. Repaired my Ranger when I got sideswiped and 100% no fault attributed to me. Insurance is only any good if they pay out. 9 years no caims protected, about £500 iirc.
  21. Apparently the Welsh spelling is wrong too!
  22. Typical local authority mess I guess. Fortunate enough to have been able to just buy another small woodland which had been neglected for 30 years starting to see flowers and fauna returning.
  23. Worth having a look at this topic.
  24. Because he wants a wood? Wants to do his bit for the environment? We wanted some woodland and ended up buying our neighbours 129 acre site. We had no forestry experience but we have learnt over the last 25 years or so with support from FC etc plus Arbtalk! We don't know it all but we have improved the woodland (paws) without ravaging it. It is a joy to see the dogs mercury, bluebells, primroses etc. spreading back throughout the site. Have planted 1,000's of trees to do our bit for the environment having done our share of trashing it in the past! When life gets stressful working in or just enjoying our wood relieves a lot of tensions. Have organised walks so that less able people can enjoy the wood and have allowed people work experience. Also allowed a friend who had a bad car accident freedom to drive around the wood on the 4.5 miles of concrete rides to regain driving skills to enable him to get his licence back. Some of the reasons why we bought our woodland with no experience.
  25. Same here fortunately it doesn't bother me so doesn't wind me up.
