  1. I've been asked by a farmer who is a friend of a relative to quote, to erect some fencing to keep his cows in. I have just starting up doing Trees & fencing. I have plenty of experience doing fencing for private houses but have never done anything on a bigger scale for a farmer. Have you any advice on how to tackle the job and how do I quote for it. Where would somebody by the wire fencing required in the Pontypridd area. I want to do a good job as I would like to approach the farmer to rent some land from him in the future if the tree surgery part of the business takes off.
  2. Priced one up at the ford dealer a few months back. The solenoid was about £120. Luckily the fault was, the vacuum pipe was fitted to the vent outlet by the previous owner. I guess to stop somebody selecting the front diff lock.
  3. Hi I am looking for work in the Pontypridd/Cardiff area. I have CS30/31 and my assessment for CS38 on the 31st March. I've been subcontracting for several weeks felling trees for a local earth moving contractor and looking to further my experience and knowledge in the industry. All training has been funded by myself. I have my own saws and climbing kit. I'm keen and enthusiastic. Please PM me or Call Jamie 07800 549585.
  4. Try the Arboricultural Association website. I have used some of their templates and adjusted them to suit my requirements. Click on the tab "Tree care advice", there is then a link to advice and templates towards the bottom of the page.
  5. Has anybody tried this method. I've got the jack and chain, just need to knock up the frame. Maybe put some wheels on the back of it. You can get jacks rated to 3 Ton. [ame] [/ame]
  6. Thanks I remember looking at the Invoice 2 go app a while ago. was not sure how good it was.
  7. Thanks for taking the time to give me such an extensive answer.
  8. I'm on my first sub contracting job after passing my felling course. The site manager has asked me to invoice for my work so far. I'm wondering what format the invoice should be. I've supplied all my own kit and fuel/oil. The contractor is a large plant and haulage company prepping the land for development.
  9. Does anybody now what a cubic meter of chip weighs so that I don't overload my pickup or trailer.
  10. Just got this done to start our garden maintenance business.Once my son has completed his climbing courses we are aiming to do more tree work. The pickup is pulling in work on its own.
  11. Thanks kentjames, gave Trust a call today. Took on board everybody's advice, For £315 they have a policy that suits my needs. PL insurance 5 million, work to 5m in height, and they will remove the restriction once my son has completed his climbing course. Whole lots of other bits included, gardening, landscaping fencing etc.,I've been emailed the policy and just need to reed it and pay the fees next week and we are up and running. I can add EL insurance at a later date. Tanks again everybody, just like to say what a good forum this is. Everybody in the house is on Facebook but I'm for ever checking in on Arbtalk.
  12. Thanks guys appreciate everything you said, I'll be contacting a few more insurance companies now I now what I should be asking for. Been a very useful post for myself and hopefully somebody else who needs the same info.
  13. OK I take all your points on board. The old labourer will be me. Original business plan is garden maintenance with some small tree work. Working for himself he can plan his training courses as he wants while I'm keeping the business ticking over. Tree work is something he aspires to get into. Ideally he will be able to sub himself out a few days a week once he has done all his climbing certificates, this way he can gain valuable experience and secondly we can build his own business. I asked for a quote for private and small commercial businesses with a height of 25m to get a feel for their prices. I was told I can increase if our work goes beyond what we were targeting. Problem is you don't now until you start, what you need. Plus he will build up his no claims which may help in the future. Just want to start the business off professionally as possible without paying for what we may not use.
  14. The height I after agree with, I have not had time to read each of the polices, they have all been emailed to me today. Do the quotes look reasonable.
  15. Ok thanks for all your time in answering my original post. These are my quotes I received yesterday via my local broker. Cover Summery 1 Insurer: Aviva Public Liability: £1,000,000 Tools: £5000 (Covering James & yourself) Plant: £0 Employers Liability: £0 Total Annual Premium = £195.80 Cover Summery 2 Insurer: AXA Public Liability: £1,000,000 Tools: £3000 (Covering James & yourself) Plant: £25,000 Employers Liability: £0 Total Annual Premium = £434.11 (increase of £238.31) Cover Summery 3 Insurer: AXA Public Liability: £1,000,000 Tools: £3000 (Covering James & yourself) Plant: £25,000 Employers Liability: £10,000,000 (1 Labour Only Sub-Contractor- employed by Trees2Go) Total Annual Premium = £590. Still need one without the plant but with EL. It seems as we are father and son, him being fultime and me being part time he does not need EL as I am a family member. I am doing a course for CS30 to help.
  16. I'm just starting up a new business venture with my son in March. He has his C30 & 31 and looking forward to his climbing course in the near future. My question is how do you guys go about taking on the odd labourer. I'm about to arrange the Liability insurance and the costs go up as soon as I add employers liability to the policy. The business is mainly going to be Garden & Fencing with some tree work until my son has gained more experience and certificates. I am going to be working with him but I can't be there every day. I'm probably only talking two to four days a month. Problem with starting up, you don't really now what is in front of you.
  17. Thinking of getting a pickup to start with. What is best Ford Ranger or Toyota Hilux, should I get a king cab so I can lock my tools away. Does anybody know how much weight you can carry and how much you can tow as I may get a descent trailer. My son is starting up a garden and tree services business and possibly doing some sub work. Does anybody use one to chip into and tow a chipper. 2W or 4W so many choices. Whats your experiences. Would probably look at upgrading in the future if there is enough work to a Nissan Cabstar or a Isuzu Grafter tipper,
  18. Thanks for all your advice, plan is to start up small doing mostly garden maintenance with some small tree work,he will probably sub contract himself out once he has completed his climbing and rescue and climbing with a chainsaw courses. With myself working with him I' think it's best to start building your business as soon as you can,you can always turn down work that you are not ready for, or sub in the skills.
  19. That's a possibility, I will look into the new license laws to see if that's possible.
  20. I have been looking at a 3.5T tipper I was worried about how much waste I could carry without my son being over the 3.5T limit allowed on his license. So many small things to consider and check out before pushing the button and going alone.
  21. Thanks for the quick reply, just trying to put everything in place. Just starting out small doing trees, gardens, fencing etc. will probably get a chipper. Biggest problem is the correct vehicle. Originally my son was going to do his B & E license but I'm not sure if the 3.5T limit will be adequate for removing waste. Should we plan for now or should he do a small goods vehicle license so he can drive bigger vehicles, any suggestions.
  22. I'm presently helping my son who is 24 to start up as a sole trader. my question is if I work with him what is the best way to set up his company. I plan to work with him part time as free labour, should I just class my self as a sub contractor,an employee or maybe a partner as I have a financial interest in the company. I understand he will require employees insurance , just want to stay on the right side of the law and the tax man.
