Fairly good idea, saves damaging the customers lawn too. I would get a groundy to just hold it for lighter branches. I'm talking about the heavier chunks...

A great reply, lots of relevant questions that I think are commonly overlooked. I saw somebody offering to do quotes from 3 photographs the other day, they are bound to get caught out sooner or later.

Tirfor raising its ugly head a lot here still though. Probably worth the extra cash in the long term. Not such a bad price on eBay.

It would be quite un-business minded to not allow tools so it makes sense really. Good to know it shouldn't be a problem.

Tirfor being the daddy of all winches. There's lots of cheaper models on the market now, Yaletrac & Jet being a couple of them. Anybody use a 'cheaper' version and recommend it? I'm talking about winches up to 3200kg... Mainly to aid the odd awkward tree, stumps and the wagon getting stuck. Thanks...

Hi all, Got a possible job in France coming up and wondered if anybody has any experience in taking chainsaws, climbing kit etc... over there on the ferry? Just simply a case of taking saws dry I assume? Thanks,

Rarely do it and shouldn't but for smaller branches it helps the groundie lower it to the floor as the weight sometimes isn't enough...

That's a good idea I like it. The reason I ask is that I recently quoted for a huge Oak to be removed, however it was just the trunk as the limbs had been removed many years ago. This thing was about 7ft wide at the bottom and I didn't know how rotten it would be inside. It was a couple of days work if it was all good wood still but if rotten it was going to fall apart. I quoted at day rate as was too many variables. In the end he just wanted it felled and left but got me thinking of alternatives....

Agree but in some situations I think you don't have a choice. Especially bigger jobs where there is a lot of variables...

So I know there's lots of threads on quoting but want opinions anyway. Do you quote the job as a whole or by how long it will take? If it's a big job and can't put an accurate figure on it do you try and get a day rate? Fire away.
