  1. No larch nearby anyway, that I know of. Not something I've planted anyway.
  2. That's great help, thank you. Wasn't aware of problems. I'll propagate a few here and there, then, but will look at an identified variety (or mixture) before planting many more. I'd only be looking at about 60 plants, I think
  3. That's worth bearing in mind, thank you. What's the problem with larch? Rust?
  4. Old thread but I've read that poplar can be propagated like willow - I know what I'm doing this weekend!
  5. Does poplar coppice well? I'd like to put some in. Any pictures?
  6. What kind of diameter are you talking? Would love to see some pictures...
  7. Our salix viminalis (common osier) grew 14' in 8 months (in a tight plantation) so maybe that's the species you have? Just planted some salix triandra but it's for basket weaving so lots of thin stems will be beneficial - I hope it's vigorous anyway. Wish I'd planted some eucalyptus now - we have one in the garden that I'm keeping an eye on as it's quite close to the house and I imagine it's the kind of thing that will do well in a warmer climate. Love the picture of the chickens in the ash - how old are the trees in that photo? We weren't allowed to order ash when I planted my woodland (through the woodland trust) but I have a few seedlings my neighbours provided and there are one or two in the hedgerows anyway. Cherry is doing very well too - will be interesting to see how it compares with the alder. Out of all the trees I planted, I think the tallest after one year was a crab apple, at about 8' (not including the osier) but that's fairly unusual compared to the rest that went in. The aspen has surprised me by not really doing very well at all, despite being a pioneer species. The whips I were sent were tiny, though, so maybe they'll accelerate this year. Like a saddo I have all my trees in a database so I can see quickly what proportions I have and in what areas. Keeps me amused anyway
  8. Probably worth quite a bit of money if it is, then.

    Gloves

I like Tegera 17 - they're cut proof so help when handling logs but they're not chainsaw proof! I'm not a professional but from what I'm told, for a normal chainsaw (i.e. not top handled) both hands should be on the saw at all times unless the chain isn't running so chainsaw gloves won't be of much use apart from keeping your hands warm
  10. I'd guess at a wasp nest
  11. If you look at the end grain of ash it looks like tiny straws in a bundle
  12. I have contacted them and they don't remember me cancelling the order but admit they should have confirmed it with me first before delivering the plants. They've said if I post the small plants back I can keep the mulberry but I'm not around this week so hoping they'll keep OK with a bit of water. If they were a bigger corporation I'd just keep the plants - spoke to my solicitor (friend of mine) and he reckons my initial order was just an offer and since they never confirmed it, there is no contract. It's not worth getting too het up about, though, as has been said, mistakes happen Why can't you obtain trees in NI? One of the nurseries I definitely ordered from was from there?
  13. I'd emailed a nursery about some trees, about £70 worth but they were having trouble getting some of the species in stock, so I ordered them from elsewhere. Today, I'm away from home on business and my wife messages me to say that they've arrived and could I please pay the invoice! Now, there's obviously been a misunderstanding somewhere and I don't really want another 70 trees to plant but if they argue about it for too long, eventually the trees are going to die and then they'll be no use to anyone. It's bad enough they'll be lying around for at least a week, unless I can get my wife to heel them in somewhere. 50 castanea sativa 15 pyrus communis 10 robinia pseudoacacia 1 morus nigra Feel a bit bad because I think it's a family run nursery and I don't want them to be out of pocket but I've had no order confirmation (I can't remember ever receiving goods without paying for them first - I'm not a business, just a private individual making his way in the world etc. etc.)
  14. When do trees that blossom (cherry, pear, apple etc.) start producing it? I planted an avenue of cherry last year & they've all done well - most over 6' growth but wondering if we'll see any blossom this year?
  15. I'm hoping I'll get some value from my trees. I wonder when it will start looking like woodland? Some of the whips I planted last year are over my head already so this time next year I'm hoping for better growth from the slow starters
  16. I doubt any of us planting oaks today will ever see the benefit from the timber anyway
  17. Sorry. I didn't read to the end, is the picture not real, then?

  19. I would have thought that close spaced, well managed trees will grow straight whereas widely spaced ones are more likely to bend. I suspect the original shape of the whips doesn't make much difference
  20. I can't see the problem - are you saying the whips are too straight?
  21. First of all, our train from Manchester to London was delayed by an hour but luckily we got some friends to pick our daughter up from school. Had a call from a tree surgeon wanting to drop off some chip, so thought it was going to be a pretty good day after all... Just as I went outside to greet him, it started raining and I got soaked. Then his truck got stuck and the only vehicle with a two hitch was blocked in by another one and of course the keys were back in the house. Was just retrieving them when our friends came back with our daughter. After dropping her off, they reversed into our fence, knocking it over. The chip was a massive load and because the ground was so soft it's not really where I need it but he mentioned he has a loader which can move it in future... The ground is pretty messed up too, dreading on seeing it in daylight! How was your day?
  22. I've asked to join under my real name - we have a free tip site in East Sussex Have sent a message but told it's going to your "other" folder...
  23. Bit cold now, I'll have a go tomorrow!
  24. They're not goat willows but thanks, I'll try just cutting the bottom ones. Should I do it now or later in the year?
  25. No, think it's grey willow
