Anyone recommend a good book for xmas. I've got To fell a tree and climber companion the two jephcot ones. Also got Art and science of rigging and the Gerry Beranek one on general tree work. Also got three of the pamphlet ones from AA. I'm tempted by one of those Claus Mattheck ones dealing with (I presume) understanding the structure of the tree and the subsequent pruning decisions, but I don't want to waste money if its not gonna help me. Anyone care to comment. Thanks

Are they bare root or root ball or containerised. I would probably water in once then leave them till next May unless they're evergreens

Thanks all. Thought it was probably down to me and a blunted chain. Just annoying that my brand new chain on my brand new saw got f***** so quick. Seems I'm going to have to hone my sharpening skills

Bar dressing..?
It was a new chain when I started but to be fair it was an old knuckley piece of 3 ft Oak which had just had ivy ripped off and seemed somehow to have bits of something in it that caused sparks a couple of times. probably had some barbed wire attached when it was young. Will sharpen and go again at rest of it tomoz. Not used to having to sharpen bigger saws too often lol

Hi
Is there a trick to ringing up large wood. I cant match up my cuts

The thing about knotweed eradication is that a guarantee is required by builders. Means repeat visits and a performance bond. That's why they price so high. Also duty of care/waste transfer etc. Tips charge the earth as they have to open up a special deep hole.

Well Well....ended up getting a MS441 with a 25" bar. The 661 with a 30" was too heavy for me to handle up a tree for chogging down bigger stems. Just have to take longer when I'm ringing up bigger stuff on the deck.
Might just keep it for looking at lol

Thanks all...I'm looking around at prices. Then I will decide.

You both mention .404 is this the width of the bar channel and is this significant
thanks

Look at O rig for HC............... or girth hitch 2.. (I'm a bit fat) 600mm slings to harness and clip set up to this.
Facilitates much easier body thrusting as you pull down on one side of rope. Just make sure friction hitch remains within reach in case you need to descend before you reach first perch and can remove sling(s)

Going to but large saw and not sure which to get. I want it to be able to run 36" bar at times but mainly 25"/ 28" or 30"
Seems some discrepancy on min and max bar sizes. Tell me what you think please

Thanks all

Shifting wood tomorrow from Warwick job. Anybody local want it for a few quid.?

I find myself using footlocking a lot in drt (just like insrt). Helps with the slack tending "problem", avoiding the use of O-rig, for instance, which have a lot of downsides most of the cases.
Or just use foot ascenders, sometimes looks like foot ascenders are restricted to srt use
I know drt is slower because of the 1/2 ratio (distance traveled / ropepull) but is also easier. At the end also depends on the size of the tree and the time you have.
Is there any problem with footlocking or footascenders in drt? looks like im doing something wrong. lol
Why do you say avoid the O rig

Sorry. Didn't read OP properly

"I don't know if Photinia can be cut back hard and will rejuvenate, like beech"
Does beech come back well?

Be sensible. You were cutting down a tree and being paid for it, your name was on the job and you were doing it with assistance (all be it you didn't want that assistance). You must legally insure anyone that helps you. What would have happened if you dropped a chog and hit the home owner with it or the home owner tripped and fell over the brash pile he had moved?
Either ensure your work area is clear of people or carry the correct insurances. Tree work is great money without the overheads!!
With regards to aerial rescue see Working and tree climbing without any emergency procedures . He was 15ft up and fines £7.5k. You tell me when a tree becomes big enough to need a rescue climber and would you argue the same in a court?
If everyone played by the rules without exception then the whole industry would be looked at as a more professional trade, prices would go up and so would wages. Instead people are doing rough work, not following all the rules and undercutting professional outfits which ultimately brings down the prices for one and all. The man that does a £300 special on a Saturday and bangs the whole lot in his pocket thinks making money on trees is dead easy and the people running tree co's must be stacking up the cash. This customer tells all his friends and neighbours that the pro companies that also quoted the work are all out to rob you so stick to using the understaffed, uninsured companies and save a few quid!!
Yes it's a rant and I will probably get flamed for it but where do you draw the line??
All correct of course. But I wonder exactly how many of the people on this site ALWAYS have a second climber on the ground dragging brash or religiously get stuff LOLER..ed every 6 months, and Im referring to full time business's not one off weekend foreigners. Probably some very experienced and competent people lapse from time to time but I expect most prefer to be compliant than not, just for peace of mind.
We all take some chances some times, but know that if it all goes pear shaped its on our own heads.
As for using client as groundie.. surely this should be in "business" section
