  2. Yea there now running two teams mate so 6 of us in all. Don't get me wrong mate, I enjoyed parts of being self employed, but there's also alot of cons to it, in my honest opinion. It wasn't for me..just yet, even with my experience I struggled finding work, it seems a lot of people are now doing the self employed route. So it's becoming a lot more competitive on day rate ect

I agree, I do like the freedom of self employed, and when your busy it's great, but then u have quiet times...stuff breaks down...tax to pay...insurances and not getting all the work etc. and like u said before about no late finishes. There's a lot to be said for being employed. I'm not the most experienced or fastest climber but its what I strive to become. So a job in pure arb work is on the cards for me

  3. Iv worked all over mate, mainly birmingham area, seems to be where most the work is. I climb on a HC but there happy for you to climb on what ever you want, one lad climbs on a SJ

Fair enough mate. The "employed" idea is becoming more appealing to me. There's a few of you boys now init? I use a zigzag nowadays

  4. 21k a year, after tax £1400 a month which is £70 a day as a climber, don't sound much when your talking about 150 a day...and iv just gone from self employed to on the books. Self employed I was on £120 a day.

That being said, the company has just brought me 2k worth of kit, PPE, harness, ropes ect ect, iv just passed my stump grinder course (payed for) and I'm on my CS 41 (payed for) in September, followed by mewp. Start at 8 finish at 4, and 330 on a Friday, work 5 days a week and if I want to top my money up I climb at weekends for anyone one who needs me...day rate isn't everything, I like the benefits of guaranteed work and nice working hours. No late finishes for me or long drives to site. Each to there own I suppose 👍

    Where do we sign??!! Lol

  6. Yea she was a beast mate, hardest part was getting the timber out, filled the 7nhalf a few times lol. Yea it's good mate, I went from self employed to the council, pay is good, and you get looked after, have only been there 6 weeks but did my stumpy course last week and on my 41 next month, all payed for ofcourse

Spot on. Haha bet your log pile in huge! Yea I'm self employed an did apply for a job with the council but had cs30/31 at that point so didn't hear anything. You enjoying it? We'll you can't get better then that pal, hours good?

  7. Had a big eucalyptus to take down this week, took us just over two days, mainly because of the amount of timber to get rid of. Cool job to be on though and was happy to see it finished today with the stump grinder

  8. I wasn't at my level 3 years ago, and hopefully I won't still be at this level in 3 years time!

Don't get disheartened mate, each climb will add to your experience and confidence.

You shoulda seen me when I was first sent up, it was painful!

A few years on I can tackle most stuff at a reasonable speed, I ain't fast, nor really slow.

I'm always up for a climb if you fancy it mate?

  9. Aah, I'm not told what we get booked in.

Want me to slow down? :P

In fairness if we chuck a four man crew on it I can see how it's be tough to be competitive. Small crews or sole traders can beat bigger firms on certain stuff, whereas the bigger crews can be better set up for bigger jobs.

For what it's worth I can see how it could be frustrating.

I agree with all of what u say my man, but i dont feel no negativity or bad vide towards you boys, no way, jus frustrated with myself at not being on your level to tackle a job of that calibre .

  10. Thanks for your input fellas, i feel alot happier now, there was no underhand tactics from the other firm, i just couldnt do the job quick enough to beat their quote, and i didnt want to work for cheap or rush the job. Guess im still in the learning my speed stages, but getting faster all the time. I need more climbing work though to enable this. Thanks alot again guys.

  11. Went to look at a job today for local village parish. Pollarding 3limes. Full of leaf right now, quite alot to them, job wants doing in oct time. Quoting agaist a decent long going firm. I just couldnt convince myself that i could get one tree down and done and processed in one day. Im quite confident and competant to have done the work but just not fast enough to keep the price down. Hence i didnt get it. Do all "newbie" climbers get this?

  12. Yup, the pantin is an awesome bit of kit. Up a big Himalayan Cedar in Clifton today, was a great climb. I'd love to try the Zz out in anger. You got any decent rec climb trees?

    I agree man.

Wow bet that was exciting, lucky you. I bet you get some great climbs?!

Um ive never really thought about it but im sure i could rustle something up from somewhere...leave it with me joe

  13. You got one mate? Going bling fast I see!

They work much better on sub 12mm line. They're designed for it, and you won't get the full benefit on 13mm.

A hitch climber will work well on any size line, is a whole load cheaper, and much more versatile. You can tune it to suit your style.

I like petzl, but I can't really see how the zz can be any better than the hc, especially when it's 3x more!

Indeedy i have, fab bit of kit i think. I can ascend much quicker on this. Love the swivel and the ease of decent.

I dont mind the hc, but i felt it had too much "sitback" for me and when hitches are wet its a pain.

When im not using it il let you have a bash

  14. You have GOT to baby it . No good working it rough . Dont drop it on your strop it will bend the AV spring and eventually break the molded lug so the saw fall in half . Wath out with the Techlite bar . Dont do anything other than clean strait cuts . No flicking bits off or anything tricky like that . The 2 bar rails part and de laminate .

Jesus. That bad? I never drop on the strop anyhow. Whats a better bar to go for? Ive got a ms200 in bits mite b worth gettin that back on line then
