  2. Don't blame him. If I'd spent thousands of my hard earned on a machine I wouldn't feed someone else's rubbish through it. Besides, if they were hoping to save money on tree work by sacrificing quality, then the same should stand for the clear up. 5l petrol and a box of matches would be much cheaper!

Yea i agree. Il jus price the clear up as if i was takin the tree down n all. See what they say.

    U lot busy?

  3. Haha good luck, you'll have to get past the locks, electric fence, rabid dogs and machine gun toting guards first.

Keith Irvine rents 6" timberwolves out at around 120 a day I think. He's out Crick way.

Yea il bare that in mind, but do work with a guy who has a timberwolf 150 but he wont bring it out jus for a clearance like that. Guess il jus av to keep on saving

  4. As you know mate, I don't quote or deal with money. If I did though, I would price the job as if I'd done the tree work too. If they take it, happy days, if not, then no bother.

People think that the tree work is the expensive and timely job. It's not. I can make a hell of a mess in a day, for cheap. The expensive and time consuming part is dealing with what's left.

Gotta agree though, it's galling when people call you in as their "tidy up bitch".

  5. Exactly matthew, then we end up looking like were trying to rip them off, it does my head in.

The customer is some1 ive worked for before and the other chap is a odd job builder guy who ive climbed for n all. I think il decline the work as u say im too busy. They expect it to be cleared away for peanuts

  7. I don't wish to derail another thread on how much a freelance climber gets.... £90 -£150 seem normal.

But I think if you look at your figures you might not be WAY better off being freelance. There are obviously other advantages just thought it interesting to compare.

    On the books:

£70 a day (253 week days in year including 28 days paid holiday) so £17,710 per year.

    Freelancer

100 a day (225 days working 28 days holiday) assuming full employment£22,500 - (PPE, saw and chain, climbing kit, training, National Insurance contributions, accountants/time in the office, increased travel distances etc etc..). That got to cost at least £2,500 a year.. Perhaps a subbie would let us know their annual costs?

So you are £2290 a year or just over £9 a day better off. With no sick pay and other benefits of having regular employment. Such as easy days and early finishes:001_smile:

  8. I sometimes feel the same, i do mostly fencing and tree work, can b hard loosing jobs to the cheaper adidas trackie wearing gardeners, and seening their crap effort at the end, often thought about going employed but duno what the money would be. Done cs30, 31 is next week an doing 38 39 after. Got couple years experience in tree work but havent done it everyday.

  9. Groundies are labourers, climbers are the tradesman!

It's up to you which you want to be.

Disagree totally......a climber can climb and cut all day long but without a decent groundie clearing up...chipping...dragging brash....your climber is nothing.

I climb and groundie and feel both are jus as important to a job

  10. I do some small tree/grounds maintenance work for a church round corner from me, the guy i deal with understands life and the day to day running of a business....never have a problem with any quotes or them paying, fair price for a fair job pal.
