  1. Hi, Could anyone please tell me if the ARB App identifies tree specimens as-well as Fungi etc for some of us newbies who need a little help! Thanks New Boy
  2. Maybe approach the National Trust whom actually run projects all over the UK. Some info from their site below. What’s in it for you? Many of our volunteers go on to gain full-time employment due to the experience they have gained with us. Ex-volunteers have found work with the Environmental Resource Agency (ERA), local tree surgery businesses and David Lewis - while others have gone on to do a National Trust Careership. If you would like any more information or would like us to send you an application form, please email: [email protected] New Boy
  3. Hi David, Have you considered maybe teaming up with someone (a friend or family member) that may be in a similar position to you, strength in numbers is often a good way to approach new goals/ambitions etc, also others may have connections that you could both investigate and hold different qualities that could broaden both of your opportunities? Just a thought. Also regardless of your own experience in the Arb world your services at whatever level you provide them shouldn't in my opinion go unpaid or unrewarded (sponsorship on the various courses you wish to attend). You, like the rest of us have bills to pay and family commitments to maintain. Good luck to you. Regards New Boy
  4. Hi Martin, Thanks i will look into piggy backing or visa verse onto another business once i have gained a good understanding of Facebook & Twitter. Thanks for the advice. Regards new Boy
  5. David, I have just googled "Swaffam County Council Volunteering" have a look and see if theres anything that may suit and provide you with an opening, also i noticed a gardening add on this site. I agree with the advice that Steve and others have provided, sure you are in a frustrating position at this stage but its one you can defiantly alter if you approach your ambitions from a different angle to achieve them? Maybe step back, reassess and try a new approach and sees what happens, either way good luck. New Boy
  6. Thanks all so far, So when those 3 enquiries came to you via Facebook, was that as they did a Facebook search, i.e. like you would on Google or did they already have some association with you or your customer? New Boy
  7. Hi , Could anyone lend me a opinion on the basics of Twitter and Facebook and how its benefited your businesses? I have never joined any of them, mainly due to being a technophobe & old age, are they simple to use once you get your head around them? I am not expecting business to roll in however i would like to move with the times rather than avoid what may be a good asset!! Thanks all. New Boy
  8. Hi All, Could anyone recommend any good Arb shops in the Hertfordshire area (or thereabouts) please as I am new to this region. Thanks New Boy
  9. I also think people just automatically ask this "price for cash question" as a matter of course or a habit without any real thought as to why. I always respond that all proceeds are run through the business so it really isn't important how I am paid, just as long as I am!!
  10. Thanks all, defiantly food for thought!!! New Boy
  11. Basically, i want something with a bit more guts for bigger trunks etc rather than sticking with a new 660.
  12. Hi I should of also said that currently my biggest saw is a 660 with around a 20in bar and i am looking to upgrade. Thanks New Boy
  13. Hi All, Is anyone out there currently using a Stihl MS 880 chainsaw with a 30in or 48in bar, if so could i get some general feedback from you please, thanks very much. New Boy
  14. Thanks one and all for your comments Regards New Boy
  15. Agreed Kevin, happy with what i offer and the bigger picture to employing staff etc, though still willing to continue to learn & develop, as it would be foolish of me to think otherwise i reckon.
  16. Really? Yes i am oh well guess its trail and hopefully not too many errors then!!
  17. Guess my next question would be other than Arb Talk, would anyone be able to point me in the right direction/location to search for climbers/groundsman etc. Ta.
  18. Thanks very much for your comments, guess it's also a two way street, hope to obtain a good pool of quality climbers to get the job done in the safest & professional manner as possible.
  19. Hi All, Could I ask the best way in your opinion to verify climbers prior to hiring their services? Do you ask them for references from fellow tree surgery companies etc? Is this the only option? Also is there such a thing as a register of climbers available? Currently I am not in a position to be able to employ climbers on a full time basis though this is my intention in the future if all goes to plan. Thanks. New Boy
  20. Hobbies such as tree surgery perhaps, but fair point!!!
  21. Bees are easy once you have got the hang of it and also they can be quite addictive!
