  1. Keep bees mate and grow old gracefully like me!! Seriously its a great hobby, not to time consuming, great for kids to learn about nature, maybe an avenue into site tours from schools etc, it can pay you back once established over time. Space wise you don't need much land at all, so you could put hives in the corner of your field. Ebay is a great place for starting out for hives etc.
  2. Hi All, I am just starting out and want to ensure that i make the most of every piece of wood i cut, waste is something i hate so having looked at loads of the posts on milling i wonder if any of you guys would be good enough to guide a complete novice through the best way to approach milling with zero experience? I.E. should i try to ID a local mill (I am based in Hertfordshire) :biggrin:and leave it to them to produce milled wood or would you recommend the DIY approach, sadly i am currently addicted to utube on the subject of milling, hope its not just me!!! Who would i sell such wood to and whats the general demand. Sorry in a advance if this is an impossible question to ask you, i am sure that this would of been covered loads of times, just haven't seen the answers as yet!! Thanks to all Regards New Boy
  3. Sounds good thanks everyone for your comments
  4. Hi, I would like to ask if anyone could let me know what price i should expect to have pay to have my defender sign written. The plan is to have the box signed on three sides, plus the doors of the vehicle, professional looking job. Would also be interested in any signage company recommendations members may be able to offer (Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire areas ideally). Thanks in advance New Boy
  5. Thanks guys for clearing this up and your sound advice. All the best
  6. Hi Could anyone who uses subcontractors to assist day to day work please offer some advice as to the normal process in terms of payments made to them and how to subtract for tax purposes etc, i am currently not at this stage but as considering doing so and therefore could do with a heads up please. Should i expect to hire someone (Climber or Ground) for a few days work and then they invoice me prior to paying them, also should I be deducting 20%-30% as per the CIS within the HMRC guidelines? Thanks New Boy
  7. Thanks Adam & Ian, Good advice. New Boy

  11. Hi I am quite rural, which is why the land option seems like it may work Thanks
  12. Thanks, am hearing mixed reviews about a defender tippers mainly that they break down, no offence to defender owners out there!!! But having said that i was thinking that a 4x4 defender may be a good choice. I am a one man band at the moment but expect to grow in the mi-term, so may be a crew cab would be good. What about additional features such as winch, lift capability or would that be over kill at this stage for me? Thanks all
  13. Hi All, Its time for me to think about buying a suitable vehicle. Budget wise anywhere from 10-20K. This will be my first arb vehicle so i have no real issues or preference at this stage other than a tipper capability? Your comments would be welcomed!! Thanks New Boy happy New Year

  15. Hi All, I would like to ask members what you think I should be expecting to pay for Google Add Words per click to have a decent profile on the search pages. Its not something I have used in the past so I hope its a good way of promoting new business? Also what key words would make the most sense? Thanks all and Happy New Year!! New Boy:001_smile:

  17. Hi i am in hertfordshire, but will work around this general area. I am lucky that money wise i am able to take this opportunity, though not doing so lightly. Thanks for the book references also guys.

  21. Thanks all, I am 42 an experienced rock climber for many years and physically fit at present!!! I can only imagine at this stage that this is a hard trade and you guys that are in the business must have to be in good shape, my plan is to start slow and build slowly!!
  22. Hi All, This is my first of hopefully many posts on the forum, also unsure if this post will work as i am having some tech difficulty!!!!! I would like to ask the members for some advice please if I may. Having recently had my midlife crisis I have decided to completely change my career and have decided to re-train to become a tree surgeon and work for myself. Working for myself is something that I feel strongly about after 25 years of not doing so. This is something I have thought about for many years but never taken the plunge! I am planning to attend a four week course in early 2014 to gain the basic qualifications and then start very slowly conducting minor works to begin with etc. My main question at this early stage is what level of investment I should be considering in terms of purchasing equipment and am I mad!!! I would also like to post the name of the training provider I intend to use in order to gain some feedback on them but am unsure if this would be allowed on this forum? Thank you New Boy
