  1. Its the shear plane, that allows the tree to flex in the wind. Sycamores particulary are prone to this, as others have said it is the tension being released. Always good to stop you from becomming complacient when it goes pop.

Interesting!!! Complacent and tree climbing... Big no no

  2. I've had this on Ash a few times, after cutting a section off and getting ready to do teh enxt one then suddenly there's a bang and a crack appears. Or it could be the start of a downward barbers chair because the hinge is close to the middle of the stem. Was the piece you just remoived pretty big and did it have a gnarly bit in it?

No it was a straight pole....

  3. I keep flicking back and forth between " before " and " after " and I recon its pretty even and a very sensitive reduction . Did you get the long wispy bits from the ground / tripod ladder with the long arm croppers ?

Climbed out to most of it and tickled the lower wispy bits pole pruners yes..

  4. Had the same today, had booked the lad who helps me out to come this evening after work to ring up the ash, that I put a pic of in the storm pictures thread, only to get a call off the customer at dinner time to say the local log firm had offered to do it for the timber so she didnt need me, but can I go and repair the fence when they have moved it! I'm more peeved that she told me she wanted to keep all the wood for thier own fire else I would have made the same offer as it is literally round the corner from the yard :sneaky2:

It'll be a dear fence then Ed mate! Bloody annoying
