  1. Thanks for that PC Tree! I haven't really thought about the fencing comp and like Matthew I haven't anyone too do it with as also work on my own, although I have had chap helping me recently who is pretty good. I find good labour to be the hardest thing to find, that's why I bought my tracked machine which helps me a lot, another must for someone doing a lot of wire fencing is an st400 stapler, I was a bit sketchy about it initially but now wouldn't be without it. I recently did a job, just over 1000m of stock fencing, I had all the netting tensioned and barbs laid out and my brother and I pulled all the barb and stapled the lot in a day. The staples I use in it are 40mm double barbed and they are absolutely no compromise to what you buy normally.

With not doing any for a while I've not heard about the stapler, I'll look it up! How do you manage the transportation of the tracked machine?

  2. PC . We just recently quoted to clear up a fallen eucalyptus in a garden . The chap declined our quote saying a bit too much , I will get my gardener to do it ........A week later the gardener had cut all the brash off and piled it every which way in a tangled mess . One or two cuts in the trunk with a poorly sharpened Band Q special and abandoned . Can we come and sort it out ! . Yes of course ... Same price as we quoted but harder work because of the tangled mess but hey ho ...We then got other work from it . Stick to your guns but be sure you quote for exactly what the customer wants not what you would do if it were your own problem in your own house .

Thanks for your point Stubby, I think you've hit the nail about the what the customer wants thing. The lady wanted my opinion on what would be best, I gave it her along with the quote and lost it to a completely different quote. Hey Ho we live and learn that's the main thing.

    Thanks

  3. i use a 10.5 L.S.K from Southern Ropes on a Lockjack , using a thinner rope and a ART coccoon makes work far easier and virtualy effortless .

I brought done of this when I started out and a fellow arborist said you wouldn't catch me using anything like that! How do you find it RRD?

  4. You might not think that but putting a picture on the net and saying hey up lads what do you think of this, is ripping into someone elses work.

Do you know first hand what was said, what the spec was? If you don't its all just hear say, gossip and rumour.

You could have asked the question without the picture

I also wasn't the one calling it "bad"

    But thanks for your opinion.

  5. Clients for the most part don't give a monkeys about 3998, the tree is a possession like any other, that's why for the greater part we don't work to B.S.

As far as discussion goes, its what you discuss. Ripping into someone else's work and second guessing them and T.O's based on some here say is pointless

That tree looks bad but that's how it looks, no end of chat is going to change that or prevent it happening again.

Ok calm down, and I am not the one "ripping" into someone's work. As I am still slightly green at it I wanted opinions as to why theses guides are in place if "for the greater part" nobody works to them??

  6. My view is that its between the TO and the contractor, its someone else's work and nowt to do with me you or this forum.

So why have BS if we're not adhering to them, and why have a forum if not to discus things?

  7. Apparently the local TO said that they could pollard this beech to 2/3s. This was NOT done by myself, just wanted all your views on it.

I'm puddled as to what they class as "topping" which is not acceptable, and pollarding?

  8. Fencing and landscaping jobs have been like that for years everybody wants it done for nowt and theres always someone who's happy to do half a job to do it cheap and get the work :001_cool:

Who you doin tree work for ed?

  9. This is a key part of any sale: Qualification. That is; know exactly what your client wants, and make sure they know exactly what you are going to do. You get a feel for it and need to ask the right questions to do it properly.

If you don't qualify your client properly then you are laying yourself open to having someone else take the job. Its all very well doing a great job and lots of extras, but is that what motivates your client? or is it the money? if you don't qualify them properly you'll never know. If all they want is a cheap job then give them that, explain that you won't do this or that for the money and you can then compete on a level playing field.

    Crystal ball springs to mind.

  10. Pricing isnt that difficult so long as you know how long a job is going to take. However no matter how good your pricing is if the customer is unwilling to pay it then you have no chance! Most numptys round here are willing to work for peanuts and in return give the customer a crap job. the customer doesnt care because its cheap! and they always seem busy!

A F@@@in men to your comment, getting me right chuffed off with this at the moment!

  11. Getting a bit annoyed with pricing for specific work, then losing it to other people that don't price like for like, do lesser quality work at a cheaper rate leaving me scratching my head. What a waste of effort, I wish I could pull up and top a few trees fell a few others and bugger off but I just can't. I also can't live on nowt either.... Grrrr!

    Sorry guys rant over..

  12. Evening! definitely a nice day, pity had to get up at 5 am to go down bottom side of Wolverhampton to finish a site clearance :laugh1:

A up ed! Yeah we were at Shef doing a similar job, when the site induction was finally over!!!!!!

  13. If you turn up tomorrow with that shade on your lips, I'm off!

I have told you time and time again it doesn't match your eyes. Get it sorted, here is some complete with PPE wear.

    Ha ha,...
